There is a reason: You have the OpenGL Clipping setting to either Always or Smart. I leave it off.

Might want to move the orb up a bit more - Will make it come out higher in software, but won't look so bad in GL.

Alternatively, make the orb sprite extend as far down, and stick a single pixel (The same color as the base) all the way at the bottom of the blank space.
