I think it's better using a different colormap than Doom's invulnerability one, IMO.

Agreed. A standard (non-inverse) B&W colormap would be fine though. The loss of color would be enough of a damper on vision.

Uh... I didn't use the inverse grayscale colormap. NeuralStunner's suggestion is exactly what I did (though it has slightly less contrast).

Removing the jewel would make it look more like the ring in Quake and less like Heretic's.

The way that the coloring is done when the player activates this item makes me think that the player turned into a temporary ghost. The name "Ring of Shadows" would actually make me think that the players vision would be more gloomy and dark. Though I guess that would defeat the purposes of being able to see in any lighted area. Is it possible to make the edges of the screen, in a circular shape, be darkened to give a little better feel of "Shadows?"

Kind of like if you looked through a scope, but the edges gradually become darker. Only you'd still see a good portion of the screen. Also, adding a sound to this when it activates would be nice too.

I could try, but it would require ACS to create the tunnel-vision effect. I'll see what I can do. I'm not sure how it will affect the colormap though.

Edit: this might not look very good in software mode...

Personally I think that sounds like overkill.

You can drop the max color for the colrmap to half, if you need it to be "shadowy".

Looks pretty good, though it needs just a bit more rounding on the bottom left. :)
