Topic-icon Using RotSprite to create better detailed enemies

The "Holy Grail" of Wolfenstein sprites has always been rotational Mac Sprites, which I believe have never materialized simply because of the sheer work load it would take with regards detailing.

I do believe there is a middle-ground that we could implement in BOA, which to my mind is feasible and not a lot of work for a dedicated sprite artist of proven ability ;)

The necessary tool required for this plan will be RotSprite:

RotSprite is a sprite rotation and scaling utility developed by Xenowhirl. It outperforms most professional graphics software (such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro) when rotating sprites through an angle other than 90° or one of its multiples. Typically, other graphics editors will apply anti-aliasing or use a primitive nearest-neighbor method when rotating images, which produces results that are ugly or unsuitable for sprites.

I then simply added some details to the face, trimmed a few bits here and there and added some uniform insignia:

The feasability in this idea lays in the fact that all of our enemies are "clones" of one another, very similar to the "doll games" on the internet that my daughter plays in which children dress up pixel art "dolls".

Once we make the full rotations of one head, we simply copy and paste and put it.

The uniform shading can remain as it is for the time being in my opinion, the only details to my mind that need work on are the face/flesh/weapon/insignia.

While the result looks badass and very detailed, idk if we must invest so much effort with copy-paste stuff because I did quite all colored brightmaps for enemies... and this would mean rebuild them.
That's something I can do, yeah... but let's see what others think then.

I just knocked this one out: the tick about this style is that there's very little detail work to be done on the whole.

Have you shown Maxim this thread? Would like to hear his views.

It's definitely an improvement but the work involved is ridicolously high. The sprites folder has a total of 5200 images :P

It's not as high as you think, since this was something that has always been a drawback in doing anything like this. I'm pretty sure that so long as we get the basic elements drawn out (rotating head/hands/weapons/insignia) it's merely a question of pasting stuff together.

Yes that's a lot of slog, but it's not something I wouldn't do personally: if Maxim can help out I'm pretty sure we can do this and it wont be as much effort as it first seems. We do not have to do ALL the sprites, only enemies and the like: that's still 3k of files, but a lot of what we'll be doing is merely pasting previously made stuff.

I am pretty certain if given the elements I could come up with a system to get it done quickly.

Well, it's definitely something that would improve the mod and if we get all of the enemies done, I am totally voting "yes", but don't expect me to help with this - and to be honest, I would you like to have being part of the mapping departure instead of spending your time with this... I feel kinda lonely

Do not worry I am still doing mapping, this is something I thought our sprite artist could do. :cool:

I think the method I've come up with wouldn't take too long for our sprite artist: I really want to know what Maxim feels about this idea. Like I said, I believe once all the elements are made (i.e. faces/hands/etc) it is merely a question of copying + pasting the templates over the resized sprites - the only thing I enhanced was the face and added a few markings on the uniform, hardly a lot of work - the uniform itself was more or less left untouched: I deliberately did so, since becoming too fussy would mean more work and less likely being completed - people generally like fast results . Completing a full rotational head will not take long to do, and once it's made it can be carried over multiple times.

These sprites did not take me very long to make, and I wouldn't be suggesting this idea if I didn't think it couldn't be quickly executed. But like I said I want to hear what Maxim thinks about this idea and if he is interested.

...don't get me wrong, you did a nice job, it's my "bug" of being perfectionist that won't allow me to release face art that is not polished enough, and it will take more time per face than it took you to do it.

Indeed the resizing tool is impressive result-wise (if the first image is its direct output). Thought quite primitive...doesn't allow batch convert etc. Quite uncomfortable to use. But still, out of all of my usual resizing methods, its the most intelligent yet sharp.

Not too many people know more about "double-resizing" than myself, author of "Double Resolution pack for Skulltag" and after all my past double-resolution work on "WolfTC for Doomsday". So I know exactly the amount of work needed per image area.
What is common to those past experiences, is that I had plenty of time at the time, living alone...before I got married :) Right now my free time is much more limited. And one has to take into account that this is just my side-involvement of a sort, I do at least 2 more projects of my own that take my top priority.

It's alot of art. Even with all the tricks...
The most I can say at this point is that I can try designing a few face and hat rotations...and see how it goes.

One has to understand that every small detail added - multiply the needed artwork so one really has to consider what is really important in detail improvement.
Your changes feel indeed justified...still...it's alot of small changes...per frame it's tons of work. Improving faces only would sure be much faster...and face is actually what you notice in game.

you dont need to pay, just open up steam, click friends tab, add friend, search for my name, flip through the pages until you see my profile pic, easy

It is what it is im afraid, I cant get it any louder than it is.. but imho the levels are fine, if your music is overpowering it, then the music should be lower

Ian,the sound was nice,but is again not heard because of the music.It requires to be with many decibels or the music to be lowered

The PM system on the ZDoom forums still works fine, so if you need to contact an author directly, you can probably use that method.
