Dear comerades, especially Virgilio and Maxim,

after some conception and thoughts, I have made a decision for the hires sprites that will come in handy for all of us, especially the players. As a matter of fact, Maxim's work is tremendous: High quality work that will push the project to the limits. It will perfectly fit into the high quality environments and be a huge surprise when people will first encounter it in the advertisement phase for Chapter 2.

I have talked to a few gaming friends of mine in the past 3 weeks and got varying feedback towards the sprites in general. Some have been totally blasted by Maxim's work as they have never seen something similar. Others did like it but preferred the low-res sprites as a charming option they would like to keep in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 as well - touche.

How to solve this?

Thanks to GZDoom/ZDoom, the magical keyword is its internal Hi-Res replacement feature that works out of the box through a hires folder directly in the PK3. So any texture/sprite that is put in there will be automatically scaled to it's lowres counterpart. I don't exactly know how this works in general with sprites and textures, but I am pretty sure people have already done that a few times. This way, we don't have to take care about DECORATE scaling or any other complicated changes but we only have to place the appropriate hires replacements into the /hires/ folder and "dang" - we are happy :) Maybe Virgilio can already try that and share some experiences. No idea how this works with brightmaps but I guess we can find that out - thanks to the ZDoom forums.

As a reminder I'll keep this topic up-to-date when I'll come with new hires sprites implementations.
For what we have now I think I can get started with replacements for Bosses, which doesn't need at least r8s and too much work on the brightmap department. ;)

Ok today I was in the way to understand how to take care of following issues concerning hires implementations:

  • It seems that we don't get any resize issues when the lowres sprite is exactly half of the size of the hires one
  • Then this means that I have to remove crops for all lowres sprites, as it seems to be from these screenshots

  • So I think there could be a couple of solutions, which I am still testing:

  • Apply the size of the lowres sprite to hires but doubled - Example: FlamerSoldier has lowres FLSLA1 frame at 33x51, the hires must be 66x102 - This would mean lossy shrink method because we'll surely lost some details (all hires are minimum 128x128 atm)
  • Remove crops from lowres sprites then adjust them in line with hires ones - At least we must keep 64x64 size per default (this would also require brightmaps re-work)
  • Remove ALL internal offsets from ALL lowres sprites then adjust them via TEXTURES lump - Dunno if this is doable for sure
  • Make a separate .pk3 of BoA (not just with hires things but everything needed I mean) where I replace all lowres sprites with hires ones + adjust actors decorate-wise if needed, so this will require just a couple of modifications probably - Obviously with related new brightmaps which I did for GOER sprites atm

  • If someone of you have by hand some really good solutions please reply here, any useful aid would be appreciated (please avoid replies if you don't know how these things really work because the amount of work could be really huge and I need an exhaustive reply)

    Concernong low-res and hi-res, the /hires/ folder works exactly that way that it stretches the "hires-variant" to the same dimentions as the "lowres-variant". This means that the aspect ratio needs to be the same e.g. if the lowres is 64x64, the highres can be 128x128 or also 96x96 would work but 128x64 would not.

    The pro for using the hires folder as replacement folder is that we don't need to change or adjust the DECORATE file or take care about offsets for sprites because it is already defined in the lowres sprite. No redundant data. Removing the lowres offsets wouldn't change anything btw and is the wrong approach.

    So the right solution would be to crop the highres sprites and make sure that they have the same aspect ratio (e.g. when the lowres is 33x51, the highres should be 66x102 - that's technically correct then).

    Surely we can also put everything in a separate PK3 but this would also mean doing complete offsets for all the sprites again and also adjusting all the DECORATE files to change the Scale factor as well. This would mean a lot of redundant data and I really don't want to have that.

    Solution
    Go for the /hires/ folder as planned, crop the hires sprites (that's not lossy) and let the engine do all the magic without any redundant data.

    Just did a small test right now and this is what happens (cropped and doubled at 66x102)...
    Beside the lowres brightmap behind the sprite, you can see that some details got ruined like the eyes... :oops:

    Thanks, now I got it.

    We have 2 different cases that we need to take care of to make the /hires/ work (it makes sense as no redundant work is required and Graf Zahl will take care of making it even work for Brightmaps later)

    Case 1
    Hi-Res sprite dimensions are smaller than Low-Res dimensions if scaled with a factor 1:2 (e.g. hires is 128x128, lowres is 64x64 or larger, like 64x72), the hi-res sprite fits in the box of the low-res sprite if scaled. We only need to make sure that the hi-res sprite has the same aspect ratio as the lowres (so if lowres has 1:1, the hi-res needs 1:1 as well, e.g. lowres is 40x80, the hires needs to be 80x160, we can crop that but not scale that!)

    Case 2
    Hi-Res sprite dimensions are larger than Low-Res dimensions if scaled with a factor of 1:2 (e.g. hires is 128x 128, lowres is 63x63 or smaller, like 48x62), the hi-res sprite doesn't fit into the box of the low-res sprite if scaled and will get distorted. We need to add additional free space to the low-res sprite in this case, to make it exactly half the sprite of the hi-res sprite with the same aspect ration as described above.

    Possible solution plan
    If all highres-sprites are 128x128 pixels in size, we would only need to make sure that all the low-res sprites also have an 1:1 aspect ration. This means if a low-res sprite has a size of 40x62 pixels, we only need to add space on the left and right space to turn it into a 62x62 pixels size (same to the brightmap). That way, the hi-res sprite will perfectly fit into the low-res original.

    Maybe Virgilio can try that, but technically it should work exactly like that.

    I just finished BOA chapter 1 again. I did not realize that a timer for Operation Eisenmann had already been implemented. That made my suggestion useless

    @newuser Simply deactivate heuristics before downloading the .pk3 file, then exclude the .exe file with the antivirus

    It's because it's a game engine, so it looks for and dynamically alters files.

    When in doubt, you can contact a contributor directly; most are registered on ZDoom.org, so you can use that site's PM system to contact them.

    The version available from that thread I linked is in .PK3 format. It should run as-is, provided you have a recent enough dev build.
