Dear teammates,

after our (in my eyes very successful) release of Chapter 2, it is time to tie the knot for Chapter 3 as there is a lot of stuff to talk about, and more stuff to plan before we directly go into active production. So what things do we have to talk about?

  • Plot progress and final
  • Map types and locations
  • Side plots
  • Voice acting for all chapters

Plot progress and final
After our dark chapter 2 we have a lot of open strings that we somehow need to pull together. A lot of enemy characters are dead so we don't have to deal with them anymore but so is Dirty Douglas. When you enter the headquarters at the beginning of chapter 3, the overall mood will be dark, desperate and sad (melancholic music is playing) people are talking a lot about Douglas and the traitor Ryan. But on the other hand BJ has made a huge victory by destroying the Thor's Hammer organization, and he has also found this strange magical sword (the Blade of Agony). A lot of dialogues are going on to pull the player back into this plot after he hasn't touched "BoA" for several months, he must be curious now what the Blade is about and what has happened (or is going to happen) to Agent Ryan - this will be what the first 3 missions should be about. We also need to make sure that BJ understands from the beginning, how powerful and dangerous the Spear of Destiny is (e.g. with an introduction sequence that shows Hitler conquering Europe with the power of the weapon) and also that Asher plays a bigger role quickly, same goes to Hitler himself, he is the main villain in this chapter. From missions 4 to 6, the player's main goal is to follow Hitler's trails, reach Castle Wolfenstein and finally beat Hitler (equipped with the spear) by using the Blade of Agony itself (means only the blade's projectile weapon can do damage to Hitler, nothing else for example, so instead of ammo, BJ needs "health", nice gameplay twist.) Before BJ has to beat the zombified Schwabbelhals as the conclusion of the Zombie story. After that, the game is finished, credits roll happens - and after the credits roll, we add a little sequence where Astrostein Nazis from the future get teleported into the Castle Wolfenstein - this would be one of those movie-like twists that are usually done in the end.

Map types and locations
We have established different types of maps during the last two Chapters, this includes Railshooter Maps (C1M6,C2M4), Stealth Maps (C2M1, C2M6_B) and Puzzle Maps (C1M6, C2M0_A) next to the usual gameplay that Blade of Agony stands for. What I would like to see in chapter 3 as well would be some kind of Open Battlefield (maybe C3M2) with a lot of tank warefare for example, allied soldiers attacking a large group of nazis, or even driving a tank yourself (kodi has already showcased that this is possible). What we already have is a town map that focuses on sniper action (C3M3, which also serves as final map where you kill Ryan on a Flak Tower, very climatic!). For the locations we already have the concentration camps (C3M1), the sniper town/flak tower (C3M3), Castle Wolfenstein (C3M6_A/B), destroyed city of Berlin (C3M4) and a started Tempelhof (C3M5_A) with its own airship (C3M5_B). Personally I would like to combine Berlin, the airport and the airship into one map because it makes sense thematically (you are in Berlin, battle your way through the streets to find the airport, then join a leaving airshop and later end up on Castle Wolfenstein), so C3M4+C3M5_A+C3M5_B would turn into C3M6 and Castle Wolfenstein would be C3M7_A/B. That way we have open slots at C3M2, C3M4 and C3M5 to add some more missions here and there. Think about what the plot does and think about what kind of missions would help the plot to evolve. Prior to the final mission, the HQ could be blown up.

Side plots
Only searching for Ryan and Hitler to kill them would make things a bit too straight forward, and we are not done with Chapter 2 yet. C2M6_C introduced the Zombies, and we need to add that to Chapter 3 as well - first we need to explain what happened to them (occult powers), so having them in C3M2 or C3M4 might make sense (with Guardsoul I already talked about a potential scenario, maybe he can tell us more here). In general, the whole "occult stuff" should be for Chapter 3 what the mutants have been for Chapter 1 and the drones and robots have been for Chapter 2. Maybe we can additionally create bosses that fit the Zombies and Ghosts we already have.

Voice acting for all chapters
This is the one thing we will do at the very end, as soon as everything is completely done (so we don't have to record voice acting for new passages while working on the dialogues and maps. I have already an idea on how to plan and do the voice actings, we just need good voice actors with appropriate recording equipment to make the sounds hi-quality. This isn't hyper-urgent, but we should already think about it now.

Map Planning
  • C3M1: Concentration camp (normal gameplay, first discovery of the zombies and how they were produced in secret, thanks to the Spear of Destiny)
  • C3M2: Battlefield map (open battlefield gameplay, tanks, gunners, first hints on Ryan's hideout, "Battle of the Bulge" Ardennenoffensive, BJ starts at an allied hq nearby, morale is down, troops are fatigue, he turns the tide). 1st HQ foot troops, 2nd blasting tanks with Panzerschreck battlefield, 3rd driving tank through woods, blasting everything else
  • C3M3: Flak tower / sniper town (sniper+normal gameplay, boss battle with Ryan at the top of the flak tower)
  • C3M4: Zombified city/town (where Hitler used the powers of the Staff to zombify the population, mission where Hitler is fleeing, maybe just as silhouette to not spoil the surprise in C3M6, Guardsoul's map)
  • C3M5_A-B: Berlin (battlefield between the destroyed roads, war scenario, finding Tempelhof airport, accidentally finding notes about Wolfenstein location, joining airship (stealth part of mission, kinda like C2M6_B, ss nazi uniform), crashing into the mountains near Wolfensten after killing the captain)
  • C3M6: Castle Wolfenstein (epic final gameplay, lots of occult, undead, battle against Hitler)
  • C3M0_A: undefined (secret map for Chapter 3, maybe another real stealth scenario aka Metal Gear Solid?)
  • C3M0_B: Castle Frankenstein (secret map 2 for Chapter 3, map with Werewolve SS and Holy Water, "Nosferatu" style with old movie shader, black and white)
  • SM01: Commander Keen secret mission
  • SM02: undefined, secret mission 2
  • SM03: undefined, secret mission 3

Well, the main idea of the map Torm and I discussed some time ago was to recreate a village where Hitler sent Ryan to test the powers of the Spear of Destiny turning the whole village into a zombie apocalypse and your mission is to search some clues of Ryan location for the following maps.

The problem I can see with this map will be the performance like in C2M3 if it isn´t executed correctly with lots of fps drops everywhere. I still need to find a way to avoid this issue.

I dont care how bad your maps are, everything can be improved.

I will do my best to contribute as usual with actors, sprites and models obviously (which some are just in preparation - can't spoil but we know which ones ;) )
Concerning Berlin + Airport + Airship: I think it will be very difficult to have that as a One map, we mustn't fall in the same issue we had with C2M5 I think, so I suggest to have 2 maps (Berlin + Airport/Airship).
I'll figure it out if it's possible for me to start some detailing for the airport place, maybe it won't be in line with usual details we have but surely it will be of use for you (and obviously free to modify it in any case).
This will probably happen next month, so June I'll concentrate on things which needs to be fixed or added.

PS: And I still have that thrilling idea for Venice map...

You know, on those missions with multiple maps, you could do something where you go back and forth like in Hexen. Like, say, one map is an overworld, another is caves or something beneath it...

Aside from that, I like what the two above me are suggesting...

We shouldn't forget Lebensborn map (by Dean probably), we have a Boss for it as you know.
Can be a part of other map, but can be a map of itself.

Cemetery+morgue+labs level is good idea too.

We also can have a map at headquarters or secret base of nazi secret paranormal division or Ahnenerbe - in connection to mystical and zombies.

Got an idea for C3M4:

Allies found that Hitler himself was testing the powers of the Spear of Destiny (a.k.a. turning people into zombies) in a village near Berlin (insert name here) so Blazko is sent there to kill him. He will be fighting nazis and zombies while doing some research about Hitler´s location when suddenly he finds him. The next part of the map would be a sequence of Blazko chasing Hitler through the village while he throws him hordes of undead until reaching the graveyard where Hitler summons the big ass zombie that Blazko needs to defeat but in the meantime Hitler escapes.

Ideas, feedback?

I dont care how bad your maps are, everything can be improved.

The version available from that thread I linked is in .PK3 format. It should run as-is, provided you have a recent enough dev build.

You have to know how to turn that into a PK3, and it's not built for release. Sometimes you even see start locations move to the middle of the level...
