Austerity - A Simplicity Tribute PDF Drucken E-Mail
Description:
A little project I started out of a spontaneous mood, a tribute to Agent Spork's awesome masterpiece Simplicity. Inspired by its design and kind of gameplay, I created this project consisting of three little but intense maps...

Whew!
Dancso (87.165.8.152) 2006-12-26 10:53

Whew! It was very fun to play. I made it through UV, it was pretty hard at
times. So beautiful in Gzdoom.
Fun!
Graf Zahl (87.165.8.152) 2006-12-26 10:54

The map is really nice and I sure hope there's more to come. But you should have
defined a proper sky for ZDoom. ;)
Even better!
Guest (87.165.4.88) 2007-01-15 16:51

This is not Simplicity. It's better. 5/5
That's right!
Guest (87.165.4.88) 2007-01-15 16:52

Tormentor got the Simplicity look right. Nice battles and gameplay is improved
this time by far over sapphire. Those revenants at the end I was no expecting
them at all. 4/5
Well done!
Vader (87.165.4.88) 2007-01-15 16:52

It was a nice map. Felt more like Sapphire than Simplicity though, althought the
gamplay was better than in Sapphire. I agree with those people here that said
that it would fit better into a multi-map episode, but nobody knows what may
come up in the future ;)!
4/5
Dutch (87.165.4.88) 2007-01-15 16:53

It felt like an mix between Sapphire and Simplicity it looks very nice I enjoyed
the map you got an good clean mapping style 4/5
Good work!
Maes (87.165.4.88) 2007-01-15 16:53

Balanced although unexceptional gameplay and perhaps a bit too large file size
for a single map featuring mostly recolored textures and sprites, although I
digged the new pastel colors, and the OMF2097 music. This could have been a nice
DOOM 2 or TNT first level. 4/5
COOL
Lucius Octavion (72.90.159.205) 2007-01-25 01:18

This was like simplicity and sapphire put together, and I really like the
texture scheme that you used. The great grey metallic walls with green grass and
a blue sky! :grin The gameplay was nice too, with lots of good level design
to back it up. It didn't feel cramped like simplicity either.

Oh my goodness! awesome! must kill demon! haha!
Concept failure
Ricco_Winnie (65.94.125.249) 2007-03-02 02:11

It is agreeable that only the blind will not detect the utter failure in the
concept. Tormentor should really improve before releasing another space-wasting
wad file.
Failure? No!
TopDoomer (87.165.42.143) 2007-03-02 13:49

This concept wasn't a failure that's for sure. I mean, talented members like
Scuba and Chris Hansen liked what Torm did here and beyond: Even AgentSpork was
very pleased with Austerity, just read what he wrote over at Doomworld! :roll
Ares III (209.6.166.161) 2007-03-02 20:09

Impressive as always Torm. Always great to see another map from you. Keep up the
great work!
Moti (87.165.18.160) 2007-03-04 13:53

The map with best detail and look I've ever seen. It looked so awesome it kept
me playing it for over an hour.
But... GAMEPLAY. Hordes of monsters, not enough
health, good thing there's enough ammo. I mean, where you get the red key (i
think) in map03, THREE archviles spawn and kick your ass. I had no choice but
using cheats to pass Map03. Other than that, it was awesome. ;)
Failure Agreed
G-Stock (65.92.215.31) 2007-03-05 18:38

I agree with rico: the concept is a failure. To be an ultimate simplicity
tribute, it should have plenty a resemblance to it. Not a direct copy of the
levels with new textures, enemy placement, etc... but a map(set) similar to that
of AgentSporke's.

The good side is that it indeed does resemble in Level
design. But the bad side is that it is not that well similar to U.S. in
gameplay. What is with the unbalanced enemy count, health and arsenal quantity?
It feels more like a mix of U.S., mini Hell Revealed and strategy combat Wad.
Not a good thing for a tribute.
Sad
Tormentor667 (87.165.40.116) 2007-03-05 18:54

Sad that you didn't like it just because it isn't U.T. ... I have always said,
that Austerity is a tribute that got inspired by Simplicity, I never said that I
am going to create something that fits perfect into the mod AgentSpork created
;) Consider this and try to think of Austerity as an independent mod, not a
official Simplicity addon.
Jeremiah Zero (67.171.217.143) 2007-03-05 19:06

I don't care if this was a failure as a tribute or not; it's the best
mapset I've played to date!  Enemy count on UV was fine, but more
importantly, Arch-Vile placement wassuperb! Health count could be spotty at times if you aren't good at dodging, but
I finished all 3 levels with more than enough ammo. I picked up on a
lot of subtleties in trap design and game flow that have been completely
lacking in many of the wads that have been released as of late. I'll
go so far as to say that I learned a lot more about good level design
from these 3 maps than I have from any other maps I've played since
Doom's release. I may sound like a fanboy blowing smoke up your ass,
but I mean it: This is my favorite Doom release to date! Thanks, Torm.
Keep 'em coming.
Thx!
Tormentor667 (87.165.43.107) 2007-03-19 16:06

Thx Jeremiah, I am glad to hear that
.+:icytux:+. (85.157.12.8) 2007-04-20 11:03

This was great!
Just as Jeremiah i learned ALOT of
mapping after played this
one.
It was really fun gamplay tough im not a good doomer so i just made it
through too young to die... But your skys and lots of nice decorations and
high detail stuff was so nice that my mouth just stood open As said before,
it was kinda like sapphire and yeah it was kinda sapphire... even the same sky
in the first map (tough it was upside down) This was the best wad i have ever
played... thanx tormentor. (wish i was as good as you :roll) -icy
wow!
Zocker1995 (172.181.188.206) 2007-05-18 23:41

This was cool. The skys got my award of 1337-ness. The third map was my
favorite, I liked these areas where you can see the sky and have to walk to a
tower or something. It looked UBER-DETAILED. It was one of the best
"WADs" ever played. And, BTW, I'm not an idiot!

The maps reminded
me really much of Sapphire, which I liked, too. You've got a great
mapping-style, Torm, really great.
Great
KeksDose (78.49.169.106) 2007-09-04 16:42

Great maps. The skies looked beautiful, just like always. Also, I liked the map
architecture. One of my favorite areas was in "Red Moon" where you can
go outside and see this beautiful landscape... simply amazing. An I'm not an
idiot, either ;)
By the way, that ending made me crack up. But I won't spoil
something here! Yes, we count on it :roll
Inspiration ...
Guest (86.58.21.159) 2007-09-21 17:14

I finally decided to give this one a try, and I loved it. It was fun to play,
maybe a bit to rough, but it may be my fault for getting killed a lot, as I was
observing architecture, rather than keeping an eye on the enemies.
My favorite
part was the yellow skull-key hunt, a really nice addition to gameplay, and the
ending ...
These maps, along with UTNT, really inspired me, and gave me some
nice ideas. I started mapping again and maybe I will finally release something,
thank you Tormentor.
Keep up the good work,
I'm pretty sure you will.
Guest (190.18.14.118) 2007-10-26 17:53

If you're gay or your masculinity is poor you may like this wad, other than that
just ignore it.
Problems? No Way!
Cole "Martyrdom" M. (68.112.200.30) 2008-10-12 04:54

I don't know what the hell is wrong with everyone busting on this for
miscellaneous reasons. I beat it and had an awesome time, this was simplicity
(aside from the details )
Another bulls eye Tormentor!

This is very good imho. Details are nicely done, level design is awesome, but
there's too few ammo and health on map 03 ( on UV I mean ). We want more !!!
Awesome!
§-Morpheus-§ (79.0.61.123) 2008-03-09 17:44

Great work, Torm!
It seems that you really like music from Epic Pinball, right?
How did you rip them?
Tormentor667 (87.165.47.32) 2008-03-09 23:51

I got that from mirsoft.info, great source for game music mods
Cool!
Rens van Bree (77.249.190.76) 2009-11-29 13:44

What a beauty of a megawad!
I love this so much
Very detailed and kept in 1
definite theme.

10+
Awesome
Talvi (79.155.168.198) 2009-12-23 03:36

I LOVE this maps, specially the third one. Maybe it's because of the music, I
loved games of that era, with awesome pseudo futuristic electronic music, and
epic megagames showing how games in PC were on par with console ones.

Clearly
on my top 10 wads ever and I'd say I like it more than Simplicity.
Cool
Monster (193.179.2.249) 2009-12-23 14:42

The sky looks cool!
FTW!
Anonym (87.165.15.137) 2009-12-24 14:06

The ending screen rocks ;)
ill (64.9.242.105) 2010-01-03 17:32

Well umm I loved torment and torture series with their crazy scripting stuff and
awesome environments and KDIZD was very fun on the second play through since I
was familiar with the maps by then and wasn't like, OK the map is about to be
over and suddenly I realize they added like another half hour to the map.

But
this and Sapphire were just simple hallways with insane decoration. On map 3
there were some really cool areas but I hate it when I pick up a key or
something and know that a bunch of monsters are about to spawn in. It's so
predictable. And also the fact that all the levels consist of simple hallways
without any actual cool areas. Like sapphire didn't feel like a space station
at all.
