dark.
Come on!
Mitchell (61.88.131.150) 2007-10-31 04:13
Come on, get this out asap. Don't rush it but I just can't stand looking at 85% lolk

The new update = fail, The same 1 wad called "void" is in the selection when we were told it would consist of many wads. I've finished all the wads here but I don't want to leave here because I know more will come out and some are still in development as I believe. Anyway, Ill be lurking.
Guest (24.199.205.252) 2007-11-01 12:32
I just played the beta, and while I thought it was pretty cool, there's still a lot of work to be done. The parts where the sirens went off and the darkmoon cult members are just running through the streets screaming in terror and being mobbed by ghost was cool, but pretty damn unstable. If you tried to go into the shelter, it would crash Gzdoom. Trying to save would also crash it as well. The pistol was way too underpowered too. It took about 10-20 shots just to kill one of the lesser monsters, making it pretty much useless.
WTF
Mitchell (121.216.136.248) 2007-11-01 17:35
Why does this wad download link have the exact same path as the city of the damned in finished projects?.. Answer me that, How did you download the beta exactly? When both of these pages link to the exact same file..
AWESOME..
WartornCove (76.184.136.55) 2007-11-02 00:28
One word.. TOO FREAKING AWESOME. Ok, that's 3, but oh well. :roll

i cant get it to work. It keeps telling me "MAPINFO" line 8: syntax error. What does this mean?

To the comment above, use the LATEST version of GZDoom. Basically, if a new Torm667 WAD comes out, make sure if there isen't a newer version of GZDoom you ain't got yet ;)

Amazing but ...
Guest (86.58.21.159) 2007-11-02 22:20
Words can not describe how amazing this was. One of the most, if not the most, atmospheric doom creation. I have been following the thread at ZDoom forum since the announcement and expected something hug. But what I got was far beyond my wildest expectations. You are a mapping genius and I hope you will never quit surprising us. :roll
There was just one small thing that really bothered me. I was thinking about waiting a bit and downloading it later but I was too excited to see what you have come up with and immediately downloaded the 1.0 version. When I finished it and returned to the thread on the forum, I see a sign written with big red letters:
Final Version 1.1 Out! :eek
But fortunately I saved my game just before I summoned "the puppet-master" and after a long and exhausting fight, I had fought before, I have seen the real ending. But it was worth it. :p
You are lucky that I would forgive you everything except leaving DOOM community.
"MAPINFO" line 8: syntax error
Guest (86.58.21.159) 2007-11-02 22:26
To save the problem go to: GZDoom - Download
... and download the latest version.

Where the fuck is the spider key?
Maelstrom (60.231.161.36) 2007-11-05 12:06
One of the spookier wads I've played in a long time, loved it. I had one problem of ammo and enemies took to long to kill, which annoyed me at first. But it changed when i got the shotgun . Loved the final battle and how it all looked. Would play again when i get around to it, so i can find the knife key and get inside that other house.
Guest (74.140.147.141) 2007-11-05 17:12
AWESOME!!!! I really loved it... =)
Seriously..
Mitchell (61.88.131.150) 2007-11-06 00:20
Just like in UTNT after fighting the 4 hectabus, Ill say the same thing that the marine did: "Next time, ill just keep my mouth shut". The atmosphere is just OMG, And you made the medical center a nightmare... Seriously, The noises in there and just the look of it.. I didnt want to go in there, I felt a little uneasy going in there :S, ok ok, it was scaring the shit out of me. I didn't have the balls to go in there. When i did, I regretted it. The ambient noise... what in hell was it!, Just a weird noise you hear when near the spider web when you go to the end of the hallway when you first walk into the medical center. you can also hear it when walking along the windows of the medical center (rooms with zombies which i have no knowledge on how to get the fuck into) I am actually STUCK, I have all the keys etc, but now i used "idbehold" and got the all map thingy, Just to see where to go next, STILL no luck. But you honestly have made me scared shitless for the first time in about 7 years. Of i game i was playing at 4 years of age.... jesus.. I am now 17. GOOD JOB!!!
Guest (24.199.205.252) 2007-11-07 14:40
The only part I found freaky was the Hospital. The sounds of people sobing, the labored gurgling breathing noises, and other strange noises coming from the boarded up hallways freaked me out a bit, and the fact that almost all of the hallways on the other side were encased in spider webs helped give one an idea of what had happened to those people.
I can't help but feel sorry for the guy who saves you the first time the sirens go off. He saves your sorry ass and what does he get? He gets killed by a mob of zombies the second you walk out of the shelter, and he doesn't even get a simple thank you.
Execution could not continue
ORL (68.38.78.49) 2007-11-07 14:46
Script error, "MAPINFO" line 8: Bad syntax

I get this error when trying to start up tcotd2.pk3. Any idea on what it is and how to get rid of it?
ORL (68.38.78.49) 2007-11-07 14:49
Oh, just saw the other post about the same problem, need to update my zdoom.

Nevermind then.
Auto-suicide for Software mode
Traysandor (72.70.125.164) 2007-11-08 04:08
I'd really like to play your creation, however my computer is unable to render GZDoom effects [I have to use Software mode in GZDoom or I won't have any background, it's mostly white], and when I try to start a new game in software mode, the game automatically suicides my player! Is there any way you can fix this so that people can still enjoy your wad in software Mode? A solutoin would be much appreciated, thanks.
Guest (85.211.16.192) 2007-11-09 05:24
Sorry Torm, I love your mods, and UTNT was unremittingly awesome and epic.

But you deserve a slap for forcing us to play in hardware mode. It just doesn't work for me... so I can't play your mod. Great.
Simple
Tormentor667 (87.165.32.136) 2007-11-09 13:45
This map uses only dynamic lights as light sources and without them (and without hardware mode) the atmosphere is totally destroyed. It makes no sense to play this in software, really.
Aww come on!
Davidos (86.83.213.60) 2007-11-09 23:48
City of the damned (1) wasn't scary...
... this one only made me jump...
... once...
...........

To bad I'm stuck after collecting that what is needed and needing to find a nice little spot to put it in...

Atmosphere: 4/5, excellent work on the lighting and sounds.

Sounds: 3/5, Ripped and remixed... not much to say

Music: 5/5, Excellent! Is that Resident Evil I'm hearin'? Works perfectly.

Gameplay: 3/5, ... err, maybe next time leave a piece of the code commented out with 'put balanced weapons here'... seriously, the pistol was weaker than the frickin pitchfork...
The ammo was 'really' scarce... good thing you still had a shotty to back you up and enough corpses to grab it from.

Originality: 6/5, Blood meets somekindofoverpricedpuzzlegamewhichresembleslaracr
oftwithoutalltheunneccessesaryjumpinstuff... need I say more?

Graphics: 5/5, Excellent, just, bloody, excellent.

Total: 4/5

Eh, that sums it up for me, i'd give the rest 5/5 yada yada, but I still need to find out what to do...

(Note, this post is not meant to mock, harras or offend anyone. If a reader is to be offended, we can not help you with that. We are not responsible for getting the author drunk and/or stoned, he did it himself.)
How?
Guest (74.184.95.39) 2007-11-10 23:36
How do you activate hardware mode?
Guest (84.12.23.99) 2007-11-10 23:44
Video settings, set renderer to OpenGL.

Shame that it doesn't work for me. So I shall have to go without playing this. :upset
Guest (85.211.139.91) 2007-11-11 18:55
Finally got it to work.

Problem is: TCOTD's guns feel underpowered (except the rockets), the Anaconda specifically feels utterly useless. The game is one big keyhunt, and the endless searching drains away my desire to play it.

I did manage to make it far enough so that, after getting the spider key, you jump back outside. After a few seconds, the screen goes black and... nothing. Nothing at all. I can still move and fire but can't see anything. Bug? Makes it uncompleteable.
Just wait
Tormentor667 (87.165.58.36) 2007-11-13 07:47
...for some more seconds and you will see what is actually happening.
Wow!
DefilingSoul (87.165.59.91) 2007-11-13 08:07
WOW ...... i can honestly say im really impressed, i havent been scared by doom scince i was like 10 and i was playin the Snes version with the super pixelated monsters that you couldnt tell what they where so it freaked u out even more. But yea as an avid doom/ silent hill/ resident evil/ any scary game fan, i am impressed at how this came out, it was really tough to beat tho, and the crazy dogs that came outta nowhere ... u could give a warning or sumthin so u could get prepared for em, i had 30 health and almost no ammo so i got mauled. The silent hill alarm was probably the scariest effect ever created and you implemented it very well, i almost s#!? myself trying to get into one of the safe zones on time after wandering too far for too long as i watched the lights shut down one by one. This may be the only doom wad that ive played that actually beat out the Ghoul in the scary factor and thats not an easy accomplishment.

overall ide give this wad a 9.5/10 mostly cuz the difficulty and resources available need to be tweaked slightly imo, but other than that, super awesome job Tormentor667! keep it up! if i ever get my lazy ass and make the silent hillish 3d monster models ive been meaning to create ull be the first person ill give em to.
Yeah!
The Gatekeeper (87.165.59.91) 2007-11-13 08:07
But yeah, this stuff is scarier BY FAR! I just don't find Ghoul scary. Something jumps out at you, you die, you hear alot of "scary" noises, and that's it in Ghoul.

No, TCOTD-A brings it to the next level. Words of the dead allow the scare factor to escalate tremendously. Common haunting locale (Church, Hospital, Old barn, Library, Tavern, etc.) are used as a catalyst for fear (the same way Silent Hill distorted it's surroundings, turning safe people (eg. police) into their opposite and shadowy form of evil). When playing this (on the lowest setting ) I constantly have under 50 health, and have even had it at 1 (thank god I found a secret of health in the same place). That is fear. Knowing that you won't make it out of the next situation unless very lucky, is fear. Having your weapon run out of ammo, fumbling for the next available weapon, is fear. All this is done in TCOTD-A!
Me, again.
Davidos (86.83.213.60) 2007-11-13 14:54
Dangit, I can't stop playing this wad even if it's not scary the way I thought it would be!

Argh... can't you like... make it so it has more replay factor?

I tried doing it with just my pitchfork but >.>; nope.
guest? (76.67.200.151) 2007-11-15 03:44
I agree with one of the guys above. I feel sorry for the guy saves you the first time you enter the shelter. He just gets murdered after.

This is freaking awesome Tormentor!
Still playing it, made a quick save to pop in here and leave a comment.
Good stuff and I dig characters from Blood and the fire/tourches are perfect. ;)

@Anonymous, use Gzdoom.

Wow, i love silent hill and this has silent hill written all over it. 10 out of 10. Really great work tormentor!
Vis (87.165.29.184) 2007-12-01 15:35
Pretty damn good, but that is to be expected, since this is a Tormentor level =) There's a bit of door-hunting here and there, and there's a portion that didn't get explained properly, but it doesn't seriously detract from the playing experience. Highly reccomended.
Anonymous (87.165.29.184) 2007-12-01 15:36
One of Tormentor's best wads. You can really see him growing as an author, and I think this had really good gameplay to date. Though Tormentor does like to raise the stakes when it comes to gameplay so it's not so surprising that some (lazier) doomers find the challenges a bit much. But this is hell after all, isn't it? A very impressive piece.
AWESOME
CK (84.220.203.40) 2007-12-03 22:40

NO wad file.
How do you play this with the -file parameter??

I'll go find GZDoom and launch.
Thanks for the help!
Jim Rainer (98.21.47.137) 2008-01-10 05:50
This was amazing in all aspects. Most of what I can say about it has already been said. But, the weapons really ought to be stronger. The pistol was about worthless, and the shotgun felt pretty weak, considering most zombies took more than the 2 round magazine to take down. The atmosphere was great, though. Basically, 95%, keep it up.
Jacku Therasu (86.83.213.60) 2008-01-12 20:31

Ryan Gallagher (Lucius Octavio (72.79.107.169) 2008-01-22 04:03
My goodness. This is amazing, though I can't bear to play it. This is the scariest thing I've ever played, it scares the crap out of me and I can't play it. And I thought games like FEAR, Resident Evil, The Suffering, Doom III, and Silent Hill are supposed to be scary... and they didn't scare me. Good work!!!!
Nightsever (163.6.107.10) 2008-02-04 16:43
Wow. Just wow. Not since playing Ghoul's Forest 3 on Nightmare have I been this creeped out. The atmosphere is awesome, the story elements remind me of Resident Evil and Silent Hill which is great, and the difficulty is decent but still very playable.

Just wish I didn't have to die by entering the moon shelter in town when the siren goes off. I got killed trying to go to the one in the hospital! XD

But all around, f*ckin awesome! 10/10, one more point for the Thamuz fight. Now if I could just find that Napalm Launcher...
Jesus...
Anonymous Fan (64.18.96.45) 2008-02-05 09:21
Torm, you had to ruin a good thing didn't you?

The atompshere of this mod is perfect. Hell, almost everything about this mod is perfect. It's just perfect, Period. It's honestly one of the greatest looking mods of all time. It's a perfect TC with perfect graphics, storyline, characters, enemies, puzzles, and weapons. And it's Blood, to boot, although honestly it could use less Blood textures... specifically the stupid joke ones and more original stuff but it was nice to see said graphics again.

But you had to be lazy, you couldn't go that extra mile. I mean, is it so hard for you mappers these days to actually make it possible to play your fucking maps?

Look, I'm not asking for much. Maybe some actual adjustment for the difficulty system. For example, maybe on the easiest setting more ammo and health? Or weaker monsters, or just less monsters in general. I was constantly having to restart and quicksave and finally it got to the point where I said fuck it I just want to see the ending and cheated and screwed something up and got a black screen that wouldn't go away and I just finally gave up on it. I didn't care anymore.

I still haven't seen the ending, and I'm not going to. I -cannot- do this.

Doom 2 on Nightmare is easier than this shit! Hell, Halo 3 on Legendary is easier than this shit! Surviving a gun shot wound is easier than this shit! This has got to be the HARDEST fucking wad you've made TO DATE! Fuck UTNT, this is HARD.

I mean, yeah, some people like their mods hard. Hell I love a challenge every now and again. But this... this isn't a challenge, this is rape. I was constantly having to tyson guys with sub-machine guns!

In short, I'm sure everyone else better than me at video games had fun but next time put in some goddamn difficulty settings! You took the time to rename them, MAYBE you could actually put them to good use!

Anyway, it was an excellent wad, your best yet, blah blah blah, make more. We do appreciate it despite our bitching.
Anonymous (75.178.16.167) 2008-02-17 16:28
I wouldn't nessecarily call this a break through or revolutionary. While there are some cool things in here, the puzzels can be boiled down to a simple formula. Get key #1, use key #1 to get key #2, use key #2 to get summoning item #1, repeat. The weapons are frustratingly underpowered. I'm still wondering why you even bothered with the pistol when it takes less time just to kill an enemy with the pitch fork. As for the monsters, I would have prefered if you had just left the cultists out. The only thing they really did was make the wad less scary.
CI475 (79.16.184.184) 2008-02-21 17:55
I'm always out of ammo!
ultra cool anyway

One more thing: please please please add coop!
Askaxarus (199.216.194.139) 2008-03-04 21:15
Seriously, this is an excellant level. The atmosphere is great and really feels like a haunted city. The final battle is cool too. The only thing I have to say against the level is that it is quite confusing until you get the first key, but after that, becomes very simple and slightly repetitive with how you travel from one locked door to another. But honestly, that's the way almost every doom level is anyways. Still tho, fantastic job!
Mr. Hell (202.1.54.28) 2008-03-05 13:36
What more can be said? Scary, dark, and evil.... oooh!!!
I liked the last boss, but with my arsenal and so little ammo, Thamuz kicked my ass until it went red.
Good map though, you go Tormentor!!!
Maybe you should like make a The City of The Damned 3, it could be based in new york city..
that'd be nice, :-p
I'd say 9.5, great work!
Yeah
Tormentor667 (87.165.37.16) 2008-03-05 14:22
That's something I had in mind as well... let's see if this can be achieved in a nice way
Askaxarus (199.216.194.131) 2008-03-05 22:34
Yes... with your nearly absurd love of detail (not like I'm complaining!!), that would be a fantasic map
hardware renderer - no go

I use zDoom 2.2 but I can't find the open GL mode.

So how do I set this thing to HW mode?

This Wad is the most awesome thing I ever played on Skulltag(Works since ST has OpenGL), sadly it only doesn't work in single plyaer due to the immense lag of all those objects, so I join a TCOTD
server if I can, and I remember the first time I joined a server.

There's a bug which prevents you from hearing the siren online, when it is sounding at the moment and you join.

So I joined, and that friggin' Nitemare turned me inside-out. And the siren makes me panic, really! I don't know how to discribe it on english, so I just say it on german:
"Meine Eingeweide verkrampfen sich bei der Sirene immer und ich fühle mich wirklich so gehetztvon diesem Geräusch, als ob die Gefahr wirklich gegen mich und nicht nur gegen die Spielfigur gerichtet ist."

So, yeah, the quotations are all those thoughts and feelings I got while playing this online.

PS: The effect on the boss monster is total ownage :O

Julius this map was not intended to be played online. If it lags in ST Single Player then try playing it on GZDoom I have had pretty good results compared to playing it on ST.

Anyway Torm awesome job on the map I find it so much fun to play but I think the human cultists should've been slightly weaker. The monsters I find are perfect but the humans just get to me they shouldn't survive 5 or more shots from a pistol.

Also if it lags in ST Single Player* Sorry I didn't clear that up oops.

This was a very impressive WAD, you have managed to create an atmosphere in this that COTD lacked. There are some quite creepy moments in this such as the hospital and when the siren sounds. My only qualms with it are the shortage of ammo although i do understand it i still think that you could have put a bit more in.
Jekyll Grim Payne (77.66.227.207) 2008-11-20 20:21
First, I must say, this is the atmospheriest of atmospheriest (hell with grammar), yeah. From the very beginning it's sooo absorbing and deep, nothing can describe it. It really reminded me some cool games of latest 90-s and the beginning of 2000-s, horrors and horror-FPSes, even Resident Evil in some way. And Blood, of course. The notes, puzzles, architecture, music, ambient sounds... it's amazing.

Now, is there something bad about it? Unfortunately, there is. This is gameplay.
Actually, not the whole gameplay - only the fighting part, 'cause puzzles, key finding and plot is just great. But fights...
First, weapons suck. Sorry. That revolver can win Weapons Worse And More Boring Than Original Doom Pistol That We All Hate Awards. Firstly, even if for some reason you decide to include such a weapon in your wad, you're obliged to give to the player something more effective ASAP. But still, that revolver is so useless I'd prefer to see "purple gay dildo" (c) instead, perhaps it'd be more effective. Secondly, there must be enough ammo for normal fights. But still, firstly, there must be normal first gun. Also, I'd like the pitchfork to be with the fist on the 1st slot. Thirdly, why the hell guys with shotguns don't drop shotguns and why the hell thompson guys drop revoler ammo and not thompsons? That just pissess me off.
As a result, I enjoyed everything, but periodically used iddqd, 'cause poking those fatboys with a pitchfork circling around a little room is no way interesting, it's frustrating. Thank you very much than you included very few traps like 'opening walls reveal monsters', 'cause it really wouldn't suit the style of the wad.

But for this I'd say that the general rating would be something 12/10 (yeah, it is THAT good), but the fights are a problem. There's a pretty simple receipt of a good balance: easy skill must me easy and hard skill must be hard. Just follow this, and I'm sure we'll be getting masterpieces.

P.S. speaking of personal preferences, I'd say that all the coolines of the wad stresses poor weapon animation and the lack of effects (casings, smoke, etc.), this create some uneasy contrast.

As with Jekyll's comment - great in all aspects, except gameplay just ruined it all for me - the weapons are just poor and make the fights too tough. And where the hell is the shotgun?
John_Smith (78.148.183.71) 2008-12-07 12:54
I admit that i had to use iddqd and then run around the city trying to find the shotgun as that anaconda is bullshit, i think that more ammo was also needed becase yes i did find myself "poking those fatboys with a pitchfork circling around a little room" I think that the atmosphere was very intense and almost scary (something which is very hard to achieve on a Doom level) so congratulations. Still i hope that COTD3 will be more like a crossbreed between 1 and 2 with enough ammo and good weapons but also with the puzzles and atmosphere.
Another question
Julius Clonkus (62.143.110.56) 2008-12-15 16:09
Is the siren supposed to sound at the very end again, did you want to give us a hint for TCOTD3? But it seems I realized this "hint hint" only after you announced it yourself.

Also this makes me think about the siren's return! yay
Coop doesn't work
cardboard (67.235.6.128) 2008-12-23 06:11
Errr, the latest version is supposed to have coop, right? It doesn't work in gzdoom, it complains about not having a second multiplayer start.
Meh...
Tormentor667 (87.165.39.91) 2008-12-23 07:20
...for some reason the old file made it on the website -_-° Just redownload and 8 player starts are there for coop.
Möris (212.87.154.133) 2009-03-23 16:45
I loved it! But I'm giving only 4 & 1/2 stars. All the ambience, the ideas, the references to games like Silente hill, the story within, deserve 5 stars. Gameplay was OK but like other people has said it doesn't seem doom. It's like playing another game, and this is not bad but when I play doom I search a lil' more action (UTNT it's a good example ). Nontheless, a incredible wad (all I expected from tormentor)
Optimus (212.87.154.133) 2009-03-23 16:45
5/5 even if it's a bit hard. But the atmosphere, the blood resource use, the great buildings and gothic feeling, the throwing trident fun, several of the ideas (siren run and hide even if annoying after a while, great idea I have never seen before in Doom), the gfx of the notes are soooo beatiful, the monsters however are a bit too hard and there is very few ammo or health around. Unique experience playing this one though. 5/5
Zalewa (212.87.154.133) 2009-03-23 16:46
There are two main problems with this wad: weapons are too weak and some notes are too long - I really didn't even bother to read stuff that was longer than 8 lines (except Thamuz book). Look how Unreal did it - translator didn't even have enough space to contain so much material at once. Besides that I find this map the most original and moody level in entire Doom history. 5/5
TeAnonymousFaggot (94.37.91.26) 2009-05-23 14:05
Amazing atmosphere.......... shitty gameplay, as usual. Why do you have to always ruin everything? This is basically just an annoying hunt-the-key map. Extremely annoying. 2/5

I guess you have never heard of the term "constructive criticism", have you? Glad that your opinion is no example for the communities reaction on this one.

Ok I admit I was too offensive on this one...

Fair enough, feel free to read what I wrote somewhere else here, that might have a little impact on your opinion and statements.

Well, I've played lots of MODs, and I think this is one of the best I ever played.. The most succesful thing in this creation I think is most of all the plot, ambienced in this dark abandoned city. That was the key for the success. Then there is the sapient use of the textures and the ability in designing the MOD. Compliments, Tormentor, you demonstrate we could all create marvellous and amazing games!

Personally, I'm looking forward to play Stronghold - On the edge of Chaos
scalliano (82.29.255.9) 2009-10-09 00:41
Just sat down to play this tonight. One question: where do I use the Diamond I got from the safe? I just keep hitting dead end after dead end.

This may be hardware related, but when I try to play this in GZDoom 1.4.1 (just dowloaded today) I select a difficulty and then there's a slight pause and nothing happens. The title screen is still there and the title music keeps playing and that's it. The keyboard/mouse don't respond until I Alt-Tab to the desktop and I have to kill the process.

I'm playing on a Dell laptop with XP, so I have the integrated Intel 965 Mobile graphics chip which is not the most powerful beast in the zoo but it does play plain old Doom 2 in GZDoom 1.4.1.

I set the compatibility to Doom, are there any other settings I should try here? I love the first CotD and really want to play this one.

Thanks.
