It's not perfectly clear what you mean by your explanation. What I can imagine is the following: The board css uses a certain div container with a background color for the avatar picture. If your picture is transparent (actually a png or a similar file that supports transparency), it shows the defined background color as background of your avatar. If you have smaller avatar as the defined max size, the box is smaller as before.
