[C2M1] Operaton: Ausbruch was created by Tormentor667
After you get caught by the germans at the end of C1M6, it's time to escape the Gestapo Headquarters before you face your execution. It's pretty much a spinoff, heavily inspired by the first map of Wolf 3D and the second episode of Operation: Rheingold.

The main plan is to sneak out of the Gestapo Headquarter, mostly without any weapon or support. It's supposed to be a Metal Gear Solid thing, just adapted to the world of WolfenDoom. After escaping the Headwuarter, you sneak your way also through forests, minefields and other outdoor areas, mostly attacked by snipers or dogs in the worst case.

Typical "Sneak Situations" are:
  • Hallways where soldiers travel patrol routes, you are hidden in shadows
  • Outside areas with spotlights on towers, moving, avoid the light or machinegune fire starts
  • Turning off the lights somwhere sou you can travel through an area

Finally some news on the map. I guess the basics for a Metal Gear Solid map are there now. I have managed to prepare the mechanics that will make the whole thing work in a intuitive way. All I need now is help with this:

Committed stealth-related changes. You can check C2M1 to see it in action.
Also, I think I can implement all the stealth scenarios I suggested earlier, so if you want to use one, create a setup for it and let me know how you want it to work.

Side note: the latest GZDB revision contains some comment-related improvements, so you can easily write your notes in the map itself.
Side note 2: I think I can add Thief-style light gem HUD element, which can be used in this mission (or any other stealth mission, if we would have more).

Thanks for the additions, will take a closer look at them this weekend. I already took a look at the comments system, this is absolutely awesome and will be very useful in collaboration maps :)

For the hud element, I think it might be a good addition to avoid a lot of save/load and accidental stuff considering how complex the system already got (footsteps, speed, crouching, etc)

Time to get back to this one :)

@MaxEd - One question: How is the system actually working? I noticed the following things so far:
  • Guards attack you when being in their line of sight (unlimited distance?)
  • Guards attack you when you walk near them (about 128 map units?)
  • Guards do not attack you when you crouch and walk near them (until you touch them)
  • Once Guards have seen you, it's not possible to make you unseen, right?

So considering this, how can I alert a guard when I am in a very bright light spot? Or how can I alert Guards in a different way through script? Furthermore, how can I hide from the Guards in dark corners?

Additionally, as you have already suggested: Some kind of visual indicator might help a lot :)

Important: current implementation of the stealth system requires special enemy actors to function. Currently the described stuff works only for SSMP40GuardBlind actor.

Currently the distance is 1024 mu. (can be changed in the Spawn state of BlindGuardEyes actor). Also, when BlindGuardEyes sees the player, it calls "TargetIsHidden" ACS script, which determines whether to ignore the player based on player's speed, sector light level and crouch state.

This works a bit differently: PlayerStep actors (these are spawned to make step sounds) also alert monsters in 256 mu. radius. These actors aren't spawned when crouching.

Right, but I think I can change that so the guard will return to patrolling if it doesn't see the player for given ammount of time.

Theoretically, setting FRIENDLY flag to false should do the trick, but I haven't tested that yet.

Thanks, I already noticed this when playing around with the system but that's fine. What do I have to take care of when I want to clone the behaviour to other soliders?

The exact preferences can be found in the script library, yes? For the "sector light level", I guess the script doesn't take care of dynamic light levels or does it? Just for the sake of it, I posted this to the ZDoom forums.

I think that would be better. Reason for this is quite simple: As son as you are detected, the game would be over. If they return to their patrol route after a given time, the "run and hide"-gameplay gets a bit more interesting as you have a better chance of surviving even after being spotted. Something about 10 seconds? (maybe also adding this to the visual addition to the hud if possible)

Not the browser's cache; just R667's cache that's available under Profile > Forum Settings.

Is it possible for a hostile actor to only attack upon hearing an attack? Like, seeing the player won't trigger an attack/chase but hearing a gunshot would.

In any event, the keycards *should* work out-of-the-box, provided you are using them in a ZDoom-format map (as opposed to a legacy Doom 2 format map).

I didn't have such a rosy opinion of the GBA Doom II, unfortunately. Great from a technical perspective, but SUUUPER sloppy everywhere else.

LOL. My GBA has no gems so lovely as those. And our SNES also lacks Doom. Tho for SNES im more interested in classic RPG's - Secret of Mana or FF6.
