Community effort: Doombringer needs level designers!

Within the Doom community, several of its members work on Doom engine powered projects that become standalone titles - Jimmy's Adventures of Square, to name one. Others move up and venture into the realm of (semi) professional game development. Since 2015, developer Kristus and his small but experienced team team (Consisting of  Matt ''MTrop'' Tropiano, Carson ''Kronosaurus'' Stacy and former lead programmer Andrew Apted) has been working on Doombringer, a fast paced shooter running on the Darkplaces engine that seeks to combine the multiplayer arena fun of Quake 3 but also the complex gameplay of Doom 2.  Whilst multiplayer was the first part to be implemented and several deathmatch maps have been made so that the game is already a playable arena shooter,  the grunt body of work focuses on the singleplayer.  As Kristus is working towards the first release to be focussed on singleplayer, a request is made for new level designers.

In the words of Kristus: ''Making single player maps is a lot bigger task than making Deathmatch maps. Not only because of the scale, but also because of the number of maps needed, the number of skill settings and the testing required to make sure every problem of the map is solved before it comes into player hands. Where as deathmatch maps are best tested together with the players. It is definitely time to make a call for people interested in taking part in this game's progress. The people we are looking for are predominantly people who excel at the blocking out of a level and creating exciting scenarios for the players.''

Due to the choice of engine, maps can be delivered for Quake and Quake 3 level formats. So do you aspire working on a title that definitely has a style of its own, do not hesitate to make the jump. Doombringer could just be your first proper step in the industry. And, perhaps superfluous: Did you know 3D Realms's title Wrath: Aeon of Ruin ruins on the same technology? You will be in good company, then!

Community Spotlight February 2012

##### Community Spotlight March 2012 Welcome to the first edition of the community spotlight, a small collection of various news from around the whole Doom community. So what do I have encountered in the past few hours across the forums and showcase sites?
  • TUTNT: Take II has been updated bringing it to version 1.01, fixing only a few bugs for the startup and a minor visual thing concerning the meteors. If you are a perfectionist, go and get it here.
  • A new beta of Winter's Fury has been released by Pyroscourge. Expect a few new levels, various fixes and a huge amount of detail, hard gameplay and a deadly cold atmosphere.
  • For all those Star Wars fans, LilWhiteMouse updated Chibi Rebellion to version 5.9. The changes are numerous, more info can be found in the dev thread along with the download link.
  • Reelism - Night of the Everything will get its first expansion in April 2012, news about this as well as information about all those crazy new features can be seen just here. Whoa!
  • Something interesting I cought on WIP was Phobos City by Aleksandrs. Even though I didn't have the time to play this, it looks certainly interesting.
  • Putrefier is something you should mark on your list of the "Must Play Wads" in the near future. The project by Ed is set in the Valhalla universe (aka Sin City) and is... special!

Complex Doom

While being on a gameplay-mod rage the last weeks, I have to mention one special thing from the modder Deadalus: Complex Doom. In my eyes it honors its name in all regards when it comes to its features:

  • Each monster has typically 3/4 tiers where a random tougher monster will spawn in its place.
  • Armor and Spheres have a random chance to spawn a stronger type / powerup.
  • Weapons have been redone and feature reloading.
  • There is an inventory system to make use of items / powerups which are randomly dropped by monsters.
  • You can toss grenades and mines with weapons equipped.
  • here's plenty more in it but again, its been out for so long people likely know whats what.

Next to that, a lot of additional features have been added since the initial release like upgradable weapons, kicking, demon runes and many more things. For a detailed explanation and a gameplay video, simply check the development and release thread over at ZDoom.org

Consolation Prize

Kinsie's project aims to modify the high-quality, elaborate TC "ports" of console versions of Doom, stripping them down a bit so that you can play cool gameplay mods like Demonsteele with them. Th... that's cool with you, right? This first part in particular is a modified version of Fenderc01's PSX Doom TC, allowing you to enjoy the atmospheric lighting, simpler geometry and lesser monster variety with the arsenal and beastiary of your choice.

Convert your Doom maps to Heretic

Ever wanted to play all most of your favorite classic Doom maps in Heretic? Thanks to MObreck you can. All he wanted to do is to create an addon mod that would allow him to preform "fire-n-forget" style conversions of maps made for vanilla Doom to Heretic. Despite being often considered to be just "Fantasy DOOM" convert maps between the game isn't such a clean process. Heretic has considerably less textures and most of the two series's AI doesn't have a true equivalent between them. So the modder had been creating a mod file that contains a bunch of new Heretic type textures and enemy AIs to bridge the gap. It actually works like a charm and I really recommend it - so go and give it a shot - turn your techbases into medieval fantasy places.

Coop against the Reich!

##### Coop against the Reich! I know, this isn't directly Doom related but I think it's worth being mentioned for being at least the precedessor of Doom. Wolfenstein 3D received a multiplayer mode finally, thanks to doomjedi for enhancing the original source. SplitWolf is actually a sourceport for Wolf3D which adds a splitscreen and net-multiplayer mode to the original game (as well as several other enhancements that we love and know in Doom's sourceports). More information as well as some demo movies can be found in the thread over at ZDoom.org.

Counterattack Beta 2

coutnerattackAnd there comes another gem from Mechadon whom I consider to be one of the most talented mappers around. Counterattack has been released as beta 2 in his development thread and considering that it is Boom compatible, it looks utterly brilliant and feels like a very modern map set. It is supposed to be a 7-map mini episode for Doom II that he started on in the beginning of September 2016. The maps focus on singleplayer (and possibly COOP). Gameplay will likely consist of his standard, medium-paced difficulty with an emphasis on exploration and semi-nonlinear flow. The map sizes will range from medium to large, with the largest taking around 30-45 minutes to complete. More screenshots and a download can be found here.

Creativity through limitation in Oops! All Greyboxes!

Novelty ideas are the kind of ideas you do not think of at first, but when put in practice, they become surprisingly fresh and original despite the limitations it wields - a novelty. In this category ranks Oops! All Greyboxes, a recently announced community project led by Remilia Scarlet. The project centers on crafting maps using only prototype textures, for which a resource pack is provided. In doing so, your map achieves an unfinished look, mostly made out of solid colors. Further rules are:

  • You can ONLY use the provided textures - no stock textures, no other packs.  That's the whole point of this project :-P
  • This is for GZDoom using UDMF and the Doom 2 IWAD.
  • Deadline: November 30th 2020.  This is firm.
  • Pistol start on every map.
  • No slaughter maps, no Terry or joke maps.
  • Freelook will be allowed on all maps. Jumping and crouching will be up to each mapper, however.
  • Each mapper can submit up to two maps.
  • You MUST use long texture names on your maps or they will be rejected  outright.  This is a firm requirement.  When you first do File->New in UDB/GZDB, there's a check box that says "Use long texture names."

Scarlet aims for "Finished and polished gameplay, and a prototype look."  Oops! All Greyboxes! is thus a project with a look all of its own, its idea indeed a novelty. And hopefully, its execution becomes a success.

Crimson Deed

Batandy for me is currently one kind of a messiahs to the community. He is very productive and enriches us with new and fresh ideas - this time, with something totally new again: Crimson Deed, an immersive exploration based first person shooter starring Vesper, a vampire that has emerged from a long slumber into a world she no longer recognizes. Explore the ruins of a fallen kingdom, and uncover the truth behind its downfall as you fend off vicious foes with powerful weapons and abilities! Currently only a public beta is available but it already shows off the potential of this game. Get the download and help Batandy with some feedback!

Cyborg Lumberjack

Cyborg Lumberjack is a game inspired by PO'ed: You are a cyborg lumberjack and a bunch of rednecks have decided to ruin your day, pay 'em back with many explosions and bullets! There is currently a rough demo you can download, lots of placeholders and crap is present, and the author Darsycho currently figuring things out, suggestions and criticism is most welcome. This game makes use of a flying jetpack, so remember to check your key bindings.
