Doom II: Resurrected reimagines Doom II as you knew it

Reimagining the Doom level designs has been a popular occurence given the ''..the way iD did'' series. But Doom II: Resurrected takes a different approach. A full 36 mapset made by JustCallMeKaitoDoom II: Resurrected is more akin to a remake, expanding upon not only the original levels, but also the story. Any new areas strictly follow the theme of the map they are a part of, so things can and will look different.

Because Doom II: Resurrected expands upon the classic, a few brand new enemies will get introduced, along with some tweaks to Doomguy's arsenal. Looking at you, pistol. Looking at the screenshots, the illusion of grandeur and expansiveness cannot be understated. What's more, elaborate texture work and careful detail deliver a geniune change compared to the original, classic designs. On looks alone, Doom II: Resurrected feels fresh.

There is no ETA on the project, but if one dares to deliver, you can contribute to this project, which oozes potential. Tired of playing Doom II? Then perhaps Doom II: Resurrected is right up your alley.

Doom Legacy 2017

waterlab2017Well, kind of, but not really what you might expect. A few days ago Enjay has released his latest masterpiece called Waterlab which is a medium to large map for the newly released GZDoom 2.4.0 inspired by and partly based on Waterlab for Doom Legacy (some people might still remember the doom port and the demo map that showcased Legacy's unique water effect). Next to the overuse of rusty metal - that I personally admire - you can expect a lot of new custom monsters, atmospheric dynamic lighting and a lot of other fancy things. You can get a detailed information, more screenshots and the download link of course from the ZDoom release thread - it's definitely worth playing!

Doom on Floppies

A few days ago I was lurking around the Doomworld forums and found an interesting thread from reveilleun about floppy disks he found - filled with 1,44 MB of custom material. Linguica posted a very interesting thread about some more addon cds which are directly hosted at the archives.org with even more '94ish material that I found supercool as it retrieved a lot of memories from my childhood about exactly these addon cds. I am not sure if everyone else was aware about it so I thought it's a good idea to share it here as well.

Doom Reborn

doomidtech4Ever wondered what Doom would have look it it was released 18-20 years later? Well, wonder no more: What looks like a mockup first is actually a remake of Doom on the idtech4 engine (based on Doom 3 actually) by the modder Reinchard. Your chance now to play a pre-beta version. If you expect some more advenced architecture or level layout - I have to disappoint you, because the main goal of this mod is to recreate classic Doom with his dynamic gameplay but with better graphics and lighting - so the author calls this a replica instead of remake. So far there is only pre-beta v.1.5 version, so there is still some bugs here and there (expect many texture misalignment). GameHacker, which is the project leader still working on it, and he doing really titanic work with all this levels (you can play even e1m8b). Interested? Check the thread just now!

Doom Rogue Like, not so classic anymore

##### Doom Rogue Like, not so classic anymore The Doom-based roguelike game, DoomRL, was just updated with a new version. Apart from the usual tweaks and fixes, the new version adds a graphical mode with art from the acclaimed indie game artist Derek Yu, as well as MP3 music tracks from Sonic Clang and high quality sound effects by Per Kristian Risvik. The new release can be downloaded here, while people hungry for preview appetizers can turn to the fresh screenshots or the new showcase video.

Doom Slayer Chronicles

In the past few months, GZDoom has evolved in the definitely most advanced sourceports - not only in terms of technical possibilites but finally also when it comes to visuals. Only few mods have really used the new possibilities but one mod finally took it to the boundaries: Doom Slayer Chronicles. The author bifurcator says, it is "compatible with all known gameplay mods for Doom2 and takes advantage of the newest features of GZDoom, such as hardware shaders, full-screen post-processing, PBR textures (normals and specular maps, also often called "bump mapping"), high-resolution textures, and of course dynamic lighting." The screenshots already speak for themselves. Check the development thread at ZDoom for some animated footage and more information, as this is close to a release.

Doom Stone - Demons of Gold

##### Doom Stone - Demons of Gold AFADoomer is at it again. The crazy mapper and modder who is responsible for the excellent WolfenDoom port (don't confuse this with Laz Rojaz' Wolfendoom) has finally released a first snapshot of his Blake Stone - Aliens of Gold ZDoom port. Not everything's perfect yet and this is still under development but what you can test so far is utterly brilliant. But no more words needed, just take a look at this with your own eyes, or even try it and report bugs in the official development thread to support AFADoomer with his work.

Doom voted best in Smithsonian video game contest

##### Doom Wins out in a Smithsonian Art Exhibition Video Game Contest What more testament does Doom need to show that it has withstood the test of time? We all know it's a great game, fun and enjoyable, and easy to modify, with a dedicated community that is 18 years strong. Not to mention all the "Top 100 Games of All Time" lists that are sure to have Doom noted on there, but why not make it official?

Well the Smithsonian American Art Museum has done just that for a upcoming Video Game Exhibition that will be held. Possibly through popular vote or formula, Doom 2 won out among the many other action genre video games on the DOS/Windows platform for the "Era 4" section of the exhibition. You can check out all the winning games in their eras and categories here if you're curious, or skip straight to the page in question and see for yourself.

Doom Wads' showcase channel

Few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a YouTube channel named "Doom Wads" that uploads one video weekly (+ the month the week is set in) where they show a bit of gameplay from multiple WADs. They display the name of the WAD, the number of maps the WAD has, the author's name and the monster count. If you want to try new WADs, test fresh creations and keep yourself up to date with what's going on, I am confident you will find this channel interesting and useful. Moreover, because the NanoWADMo finishes less than 10 days ago, a lot of WADs were put in the video. First week of November. And here's the direct link to their channel.

Doom with PBR

Since a few months now, GZDoom supports PBR materials. Some dedicated modders thought it might be a good idea to generate normal/roughness/metallic/ao maps for the good old classic doom textures. First I thought "Can this look good?" - well, it really does. The current state can be found at the development thread at Doomworld and I really hope that these people get the rest pulled of. It feels very modern and still gives you this slight retro-look that we all love so much.
