Doom Zero - A uniquely nuanced Vanilla experience for Doom 2

Working within the limitations of Vanilla Doom requires authors to be creative with what they got. We have seen things like Back to Saturn X or Doom4Vanilla that all provide a refreshing new experience that still can run within the original MS-DOS exectuable. Doom Zero, the firstborn by author DASI-I, is also such a refreshening new experience that has not seen enough love. DASI-I takes the basic outlines set by id Software and crafts new scenario's around the vanilla limitations. The real brilliance here lies in the details: Using subtle trickery and inventing new mechanics around the confines of the vanilla structures, Doom Zero provides a MegaWAD full of levels that are distinctly different from Doom 2, yet suitably appropiate and natural. They demonstrate a craftmanship for detail and a challenge to anyone looking for a nuanced alternative to the Doom style of gameplay. As such, Doom Zero is a release that has flown under the radar - But which deserves to be played and experienced. It is a striking tribute to Doom's 25th anniversary, and the ''hidden gem'' you are looking for.

Doom: Golden Souls - Remaster

"Golden Souls not only somehow organically combined the action of Retro FPS with the whimsy of Classic Platformers, but has also set a high standard for that type of medium in which I desire to attempt to match myself with my own projects. It's a chance to go on a magical adventure while holding a shotgun- I couldn't imagine anything more beautiful than that."

Through good times and bad times, Golden Souls has been a big part of Batandy's life for 8 years, and while the new games have become something even more unique, he still looks back and thinks of those humble roots, that simple happy garden with the Golden Cacodemon running away from the player, the first Van Gogh inspired map that has become a staple of all his works and the quirky little drawings of Doomguy killing demons to save the day. His intentions with this remaster are not only to improve on that foundation without betraying what was his vision back then for this project, but also provide an entry point for people that want to experience this mod for the first time and for the people that already played this adventure and want to experience it all over again with a fresh new coat of paint.

Doom: The Golden Souls

Doom - The Golden SoulsOh yes, it's there: The greatest thing since Doom and Mario 64 has finally been released! Doom: The Golden Souls is exactly what all of us oldschool games have been waiting for, a combination of two of the best games of all time. The mapper Batandy says about his project, that it is a groundbreaking hub-based mod, heavily influenced by one of the greatest games of all time: Super Mario 64. To progress through the game, you must collect "Golden Souls" in order to unlock doors in the main hub, a big mansion. You can access any level through the paintings on the walls. In order to explore every single part of a level, you may even need to backtrack in an older painting, after finding an important item. More information as well as descriptions about the weapons, items and the whole mod can be found here. Take your time, it's worth every single second!

Doom2.net is back online!

##### Doom2.net is back online! After a long period of inaccessibility, the old Doom2.net site is back online. It was famous for hosting many sites, notably Compet-N and the Doom Depot. What more is there to say?

Doom2.net resurrected

##### Doom2.net resurrected Just in case you haven't noticed it yet: After struggling with nameserver issues for over half a year, Doom2.net is back online. The classic Doom site is best known as the host of Doom Depot (Doom64 Absolution), Compet-n and many other brilliant and also historic Doom pages. Unfortunately Compet-n's FTP and demo file services are still defunct, but at least it's a first step. Take your time, it'll be worth every single line of information and every bit and byte of downloads.

Doom64 as it's meant to be

doom64retriYou are a big fan of Doom64 but you don't like how Absolution or Brutal Doom64 turned out as it isn't the classic feel you are wanting? Suffer no more as the modder Nevander has finally released his first version of Doom 64: Retribution. This project is a full re-make and "port" of Doom 64 for the Nintendo 64 to the GZDoom engine. The goal of the project come close to the original game as much as GZDoom will allow with minor improvements for that extra bit of polish. The mod features

  • All original maps ported directly from Doom 64 with accurate texturing in UDMF format
  • Custom intermission text screens recreating the originals with text lines that fade instead of type on
  • Bonus "fun" maps are accessible from a hub style selection map
  • All original cloud skies match up to the color and map slot they belong in from the original game
  • Unmaker has been recreated to function identical to the original and uses cells for ammo
  • Doom 64 HUD has been remade and incorporated replacing the normal Status Bar
  • Player viewheight and size adjusted to match with Doom 64's larger map and sprite scale
  • All Doom 64 monsters are remade and adjusted to match Doom 64's original behavior

and so much more making this total conversion the closest remake of Doom 64 I have ever seen. Screenshots, more info and a download can be found at the official ModDB page.

Doom64 EX v2.2

##### Doom64 EX v2.2 A few days ago, the latest build of Doom 64 EX has been released including the corresponding editor. There is a huge amount of bugfixes and it also introduces several new features. Even though it was supposed to be the last version that handles bugfixes, but you might still expect some flaws as Kaiser just stated on Tuesday. But anyway, it's a release to have and to download, even if you only want to help track the remaining things down and support the developers.

Doom64 on a windows pc

##### Doom64 on a windows pc Today a new version of Doom64 EX has been released by Kaiser, bringing it up to version 2.0. Many things have been added, changed and fixed making the whole thing a bit more stable and compatible. For those of you who have never heard of this, Doom64 EX is a faithful recreation of the original Doom64 game for the N64 using the Doom source code as the base with the benefit from newer control methods like mouse look, high resolutions and color depth. More information, screenshots and the download can be found at the official webpage.

DoomBuilder dead?

GZDoomBuilderThe development around CodeImp's DoomBuilder 2 has been very silent in the past years. If you aren't an active member in the forums you might have missed its unofficial successor though. MaxEd is a name that you should remember in the future, not only for his Exhumed conversion we've recently talked about but also his amazing GZDoomBuilder map editor that directly builds on the last released version of DB2. Compared to its origin, the new map editor is absolutely superior, adding features like 3D model support, auto scaling and alignment of walls, flats, preview of dynamic lights in 3D mode and many other amazing things that DB2 is missing but makes mapping for GZDoom so much easier and faster. I've been working with the mapping tool now for several weeks due to WolfenDoom Blade of Agony and I love every single bit of it. And what's even better: The development still continues. You are missing some functionality? No problem, if it's a request that makes sense, post it to the development thread and expect an update within a few days - thanks to MaxEd! Thanks alot for your dedication and the way you are making things easier for so many of us!
