Machines of Death

After his first Wolfenstein project Shadows of Destiny has been released only a few months ago, you would consider he will take a short break but little did I know. Just a few weeks ago he has released the first beta version of the successor with the promising title Machines of Death, another GZDoom-project based on the original Wolfenstein 3D with a lot of interesting additions thanks to the new engine-capabilities. He really took the spirit and carried it further. This is a real recommendation if you are into those good old times. Check the development thread and the beta version at the ZDoom forums.

Map like its 1993 (Literally): ReDoomed for Mac/Linux/BSD released

When iD Software released Doom in 1993, they developed the levels on NEXTSTEP, a now defunct operating system. Fast forward to 2015. John Romero himself releases the source code to DoomED, the level editor used 12 years prior to craft the classic levels we now and love today. Since the source code is over a decade old, it only works on the aforementioned NEXTSTEP operating system - which as established, is defunct. Enter developer Tedge aka Josh Freeman of Twilight Edge Software. Using the sources provided 5 years ago, the company has ported DoomED over to Mac, Linux and BSD under the new name ReDoomed. Whilst the several seperate windows may daunt most users (A typical case of object oriented development and a legacy of the NEXTSTEP days), ReDoomed allows aspiring mappers to develop levels ''the way iD did''.  Staying true to the original but ported to modern operating systems, ReDoomed is an interesting historic case - and perhaps a starting ground for the next big thing, for some.

Mario Kart-style Mirror Mode

To get his feet wet after not paying attention to ZDoom for a while, TehRealSalt decided to take a stab at remaking the Mirror Mode he did for SRB2Kart, but in ZScript form instead of C. Really simple trick, just flips the screen, then flips strafing and looking. Requires OpenGL for the shader, but otherwise should be compatible with just about everything. Far from perfect, but a lot of the issues would only be solvable as an EXE modification. More information can be found at the release thread. Known issues are:

  • Might be a little messy with MP prediction (confirm?). May update this in the future to try and use PlayerThink, but I want to make sure it maintains its current level of compatibility.
  • Sounds are flipped. Not much I can do about this one.
  • Automap is wrong too, which I probably also can't do anything about.
  • Occasional, really subtle mouse jitter with rendering interpolation. Yep, also can't do anything about this.

Mario64 in GZDoom?

From a technical aspect, it is definitely possible. But what about the conceptual? The modder StalkerBlade is exactly doing that at the moment. For various reasons a release isn't planned at the moment but I really hope that he is revising his decision. What I can see so far looks very interesting and promising and with some help from the community chances are high that this turns into a really good thing. Don't believe me? Check the thread and see for yourself - and let's hope, we will get something playable in the near and not so far future.

Maskim Xul done - almost...

Maskim Xul is a project by Obsidian, that he started around mid-2014 and in its 3-year lifespan has been the most erratic and peculiar wad I've ever worked on thus far. The project was his attempt to accomplish 2 things: Create a decently large map as opposed to the small ones he is accustomed to and satisfy his incorrigible fetish for bookshelf textures. Mmmm, books.... The wad is for Boom format and utilizes a rather large amount of DeHackEd, (impressive that people still use it) as well as a ZDoom-exclusive OGG for the main attraction (courtesy of Eris Falling and his extremely well honed composing skills). Expect new textures, new enemies and even some new weapons to aid you in the combat. But most of all, expect the unexpected... check the development thread with an almost finished release candidate here.

Masters of Chaos

##### Masters of Chaos Caleb26 has just released his Heretic project Masters of Chaos - brilliant news if you ask me. It features a total of three new episodes with ten or eleven maps each, new weapons, new monsters, lots of new stuff but staying close to the original saga. The maps feel pretty good, look nice in terms of detail and they carry the usual Heretic atmosphere but also giving the whole thing a nice twist with all the new things to discover. If you are a Heretic fan and if you want to support the few projects released for this amazing classic game, give it a go. You can download the mod over at ZDoom.org.

Mekanism Episode 2 is here

Mekanism Episode 2's screenshot with its title

Back in March, Womp the Cat released their WAD named MEKANISM. Initially, it had 6 maps with an interesting, dark environment accompanied with, according to its author, orange and purple touches. It got updated about an hour ago with a brand new episode, along with some tweaks and a secret level made with the collaboration of Thelokk.

Sadly enough, the initial episode 1 message got wiped out for the second episode's release, but if you’re looking for stuff to try, here’s a really fresh addition. I will definitely try it out soon and you can read more on their project page.

Membrane

It is so impressive to see, how far the Doom engine has come if you take a closer look at Membrane, a standalone game developed by SuperDon which is based on GZDoom. Featuring fast gameplay, expansive labyrinthine levels, with fun sci fi weapons and powers. Membrane is a throwback to classic First Person Shooters, inspired by the likes of Jedi Knight, Duke Nukem 3d, and of course Doom.

The story so far: You awaken in the crumbling ruins of a laboratory. An alien membrane covers your arms and back. You hear it in your head... responding to your thoughts, telling you to escape! As you climb into the light, it becomes clear you have been the subject of alien experimentation. You can hear a patrol in the distance... you will have to fight your way out and find a way back to Earth! A gameplay trailer can be found in the official thread over at ZDoom as well es on the ModDB page.

Memoirs of Magic

memoirsmagicGloome based total conversions seem to be fashion lately. Memoirs of Magic is a project based on GZDoom that the modder TheStrawberryOctopus is currently working on and I have to admit: I totally love the artwork and the style in ther - somehow reminds me of the good old SNES times, don't ask me why. You can find videos, screenshots and an impressive amount of sprite artwork in the development thread. The mod is far from being finished so there is no download but at least, there is something to look at and give feedback of.

Mercury Rain

A short, slightly puzzle-oriented map originally made for TerminusEst13's DUMP3 project (Doom Upstart Mapping Project) by Jimmy. You're stuck on the weather-worn planet Ratama with only a bunch of hostile aliens for company. Find a way off it and kill everything in your way.
