Mutiny

MutinyJust stumbled upon a project led by 40oz which totally caught my attention: Mutiny. It is a 16-level, Limit Removing Community Project Episode for Doom 2 intended to be the spiritual successor of late 90's cyberpunk themed wads such as STRAIN, Hacx, Nimrod, Dystopia 3, and Perdition's Gate. It features new colorful, high contrast, (intentionally retro) textures inspired by the works of Iika Keranen and Anthony Czerwonka, complete with plenty radioactive signs, warning stripes, computers, slime, and rust. It's currently in development but you already can take a closer look in the dev-thread, so go check it out.

NaNoWADMo is over

There are many things that are cool about the month of October. Mainly because it ends with Halloween, objectively the best special day earthlings have to offer. The Spook Season has the best vibes, so I guess it’s not a surprise that the NaNoWADMo took place during that month. For those who do not know, the NaNoWriMo (standing for National Novel Writing Month) is a month-long contest but foremost a self-challenge spanning each November in which you try to be consistent enough to compose a story made of 50,000 words on about any topic.

And NaNoWADMo is clearly the same vibes, but with WAD mapping. The goal is basically to map something during the 31 days of October. Well, October is sadly over and so is NaNoWADMo. And oh yeah! People did map WADs! I’m particularly looking forward into trying the WADs from Kam Tovalski, Meowgi, Blue Phoenix, Death Bear, Napsalm and cannonball; but just try them all! There are 17 links in the second message of the event and you can head toward the provided link to discover them.

Needs more /newstuff (tm)

##### Needs more /newstuff (tm) Over at Doomworld, the latest /newstuff edition has been published featuring brand new reviews of several interesting wads and projects released in the past couple of days, weeks, months, years and decades (yes baby, let's go for the '94s!). If you haven't played all of them yet, you should definitely take a look at Reverie, a 32 map megawad which even earned a Cacoward, Khorus Speedy Shift, a 32 map megaward created in 26 days (and in terms of quality, it's pretty well done) and also Object 34: Sonar, something you didn't expect when you play it. More can be read in the official article here.

Needs more ReX

##### Needs more ReX If you are into classic homages, this was definitely a week for you. In case you missed it: ReX has released two of his projects which have already been in production for several months now and are - at least in my opinion - a must-have and -play for every kind of Doomer, especially those who already loved mods like Knee-Deep in ZDoom or The Ultimate Needs More Detail. The first project is Deimos : Slight Return, a collection of nine maps that attempt to capture the look and feel of the original Episode 2 and do pretty well at that. The other one is actually more a collaboration project from the Persecution Complex called The Phobos Directive, a mod filled with numerous new content (different monster behaviour, lots of eyecandy) and maps that are a mixture of new areas and little parts that resemble the original areas of E1. It catches the good old Phobos theme quite well but adds a new twist in terms of gameplay. Get them both, and thanks to the authors for these brilliant releases!

New shots for the box!

##### New shots for the box! It has already been a while since I updated the screenshot box in the upper right corner. Took some time today and added 35 new "must see" wads, mods and projects to the whole slideshow. Take your time, zap through them or just wait for them to occassionally change to mark some point of interest for you by chance. Feel free to submit additional shots of your own mods by the way, just post some of them to apropriate forum thread! Heretic, Hexen and Strife is also allowed - actually any kind of Doom Engine shots!

New standalone game called Eternity Blitz in progress

Standalone games based on Doom are getting ever more popular - Hedon is one, but Memoirs of Magic also fits the bill. ZDoom resident NachtIntellect has been working on his first project for a few months already, and he instantly aims for the stars - A full blown standalone game, using GZDoom as it's base called Eternity Blitz. Described as ''a retro shooter where it feels a bit like a game of speed and agility'', where the player moves in such a way that allows it to engage with enemies in order to gain boosts to some of their stats.

Combo's and specials would be made possible through special meters and NachtIntellect is thinking of the idea to have each enemy have a stage where they change tactics too based on their health values to provide a challenging experience for the players that runs very smoothly. Up to 12 weapons are to be planned along with 28 maps for your enjoyment. Storywise Eternity Blitz tells the tale of Yuihachi Haas, Codename: ''100 Wespenschwerm'' in the year 2069.  After returning from a vacation, He receives a distress call, only to look over a cliff and find out the soil is rotted and the city is on fire. Demons have invaded through some means and it's your turn to apply the brakes on the scum.

Featuring an epic soundtrack by none other than Jimmy, the Midi Maestro from Hell, Eternity Blitz is set out to be a wickedly fast-paced shooter that should run like a Lost Soul gliding on ice: Buttery - and  i mean buttery! smooth.  An very early alpha is available at the source link, but for those who want to be on the pinnacle of development, follow the Eternity Blitz Discord.

News authors wanted!

"The last news entry is from March 2022, isn't that a bit old?!" - Well, yes. And therefore the Realm667 is recruiting authors who are interested in crawling the major Doom communities as well as ModDB areas to collect the latest releases and updates for Doom mods, editors, content or trivia. Why? Because it's always a good thing to have one central spot where all the wires connect. If you are interested in contributing, drop me a line on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the subject "[News Author Application]". We would be happy to have you on board to deliver.

News from HPack

HPack H1M10 Good news for those of you who already thought Demonic Uprising (originally known as HPack) is dead or cancelled: Work has been resurrected again and the project is alive and nearing completion - at least a playable demo is underway featuring the first episode "Terrene of Sorrow". There is still a lot of work left to be done but we have a good feeling about the direction of the project and the latest plans we have made so far. If you want to help or support us, simply join in the forums, the more, the better. By the way, Gez is working on a Github solution lately which will come in handy for all of us. And to tease you with screenshots and not only words, a WIP-shot can be found in this news item.

Nitemare 3D Reborn

Nitemare 3D RebornSome months ago, I already reported about a remake of Nitemare 3D for GZDoom, that is under development by MetroidJunkie. Well, it is not dead yet, in case it's still under heavy progress according to the mapper himself. Many aspects of the original game have been converted and MetroidJunkie is currently focussing on other new and nifty ideas to spice the old game up a bit. Several new screenshots and some reports can be found in the development thread over at ZDoom.org. Drop him a line, give him some feedback, as this is one of the projects I am looking forward a lot.

Nobody Told Me About id - a Build Engine-styled mod for GZDoom

Doom versus Duke Nukem 3D. Its an age old debate, similar to Duke Nukem 3D versus Quake. Opinions will forever differ, if not on the technology they used. Doom versus Build. Who will triumph? With CantSleep's Nobody Told Me About id, or NTMAI for short, we may have an answer. This GZDoom mod  tries to translate the charm of the games running on the Build Engine, and apply those same principles to Doom. NTMAI achieves this through multiple things:

  • Some cool resources by Kinsie (Title & intermission background, sounds)
  • Replaced the object sprites to 1.5x upscaled sprites based on hidfan's Neural Upscaled sprites
  • Less slippery movement, sprite shadows and blood & gore system made by Nash
  • Higher resolution monster graphics, nicer explosions and some sound caulking
  • More dynamic camera movement: flinching, shaking, head flies off when gibbed...
  • Angled weapons courtesy of Angled Doom and Bullet puff sounds depending on what kind of weapon you use (fist, chainsaw, gun)
  • A quick reloadable pistol, a classic/revable Chaingun, and a BFG 9000 that recoils...
  • Impactful power-ups (Soulsphere, Invulnerability Sphere...), some items are now used through the inventory (Berserk, Infrared)
  • Blood-styled movement for monsters
  • New monster abilities: jumping over pits, jumping at enemies, charging at the player, added missing melee states...

NTMAI is still in an early phase, but it is shaping up to combine the best of both worlds. Head over to the main thread and view the video content. With NTMAI, there is now one possible answer to who is better - Duke, or Doom.
