Real Suburbs

##### Real Suburbs Seargent_Mark_IV has just released his remake of original Doom2's "Suburbs" map called Neighborhood from Hell. It follows the same style of my previous map, After the Holocaust. Extremely non-linear gameplay full of optional areas to explore with a sandbox felling. You can enter inside any building of the map. Explore all the houses to find supplies, and find your way out of this hell on earth. And just as Enjay said: "A map based on "Suburbs" that actually looks like a suburb? Unpossible!!!!11111one" - don't believe, but try! :) You can get more screenshots and a download link in the official development thread at ZDoom.

Real-time day/night/weather

Realtime Weather from NashNash, who is already one of the best-known members in the community, once more teases to amaze us. In his development thread over at ZDoom.org he presents one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen done in the Doom engine with clever use of ACS and ZDoom: A real-time day/night/weather system that is highly customizable and flexible as well. Currently it features real-time day and night cycle with tinting across the entire map, sun lens flare, particle clouds in the sky, chance for overcasting, rain and thunderstorms, completely random and in real-time, rain drops that do not fall through ceilings, compatible with sector lighting  (the engine does not overwrite your sector lighting work) and many many more is already in or planned in the upcoming v1.0 of the mod (including the source as well). It's definitely worth checking the thread and praising the programmer.

Realm of Parthoris

Realms of ParthosisWhere the quantity of maps and mods is pretty low, we finally have something interesting ongoing for Heretic again: A community project called Realm of Parthoris (btw, wasn't there something called HPack, anyone?). The project is spearheaded by Egregor and is already coming along quite nicely, based on vanilla compatibility and from a pistol wand start. From what I could see it has a very classic feeling and it's definitely a good thing to get another megaward for Heretic of quality - as in my eyes, it's still one of the greater fps shooters with a medieval/mystical background. Anyway - check the dev thread.

Realms of zoOn

rozoonAt the ZDoom forums, jimmy has recently released his fourth version of his mapset Realms of zoOn which is definitely a very unique experience when it comes to mods. Acually he doesn't tell you much but "Welcome to the world of the sleeping. The endless void of the uncertain subconscious. Can you defeat us" but that's already making me very curious if the screenshots aren't enough yet. Check the release thread and give it a try.

Reelism for the third!

Get ReelGood news for those freaky people (like me) who have waited so long for the next expansion pack of Kinsie's REELISM: It's out! But, what is is actually all about for those of you who have never heard of it before?

Each game is divided into five sixty-second rounds. In between each round, this slot machine in your HUD activates, changing the rules set for the next round. One minute you're rolling around in an absurdly large tank crushing Hell Knights beneath your treads without a care in the world, the next you're desperately fleeing at half speed while firing Wolfenstein weapons futilely at an invulnerable hellbeast, then the next you're flying around lobbing petrol bombs at Imps. The choice isn't yours, it's all up to chance and a cruel, unforgiving RNG. And if you survive all five rounds...?

This doesn't only sound good - it's hell of a fun to play! Check the thread, download the file and get reel!

Reelism2 - Early Excess

Nearly nine goddamn years after the original Cacoward-winning mod emerged from the swamp of our psyche (and roughly half a decade after its last update), Reelism is back! The original development team has reassembled to completely rebuild the whole thing using the latest GZDoom functionality, allowing us to go above and beyond with bizarre and hilarious new features. If you never played the original Reelism, here's how it works: It's an arcade survival mode where gameplay is split into five sixty-second rounds. At the start of each round, three modifiers on a slot-machine style display are re-rolled, changing gameplay rules and what weapons and monsters spawn. Some of these are fairly normal, like, say, "explosive weapons" or "Imps and their many variants". Some are quite a bit less normal, like "drive an invulnerable tank", "swarms of the dogs from Wolfenstein 3D" or "shrink to the size of a Pinky's toe". If, after five of these rounds, you've somehow managed to stay alive, a strange and wacky boss will swing by to finish you off. Defeat the boss to achieve victory! Alternatively, die hilariously and vow to get a higher score next time!

REKKR

rekrrOne more time out of nowhere a total surprise popped out while I was lurking the Doomworld forums: The author Revae has posted a thread about his project REKKA a few days ago, that is an Ultimate Doom vanilla TC that takes place in a faux-norse/celtic sorta fantasy world. You beat up monsters, steal their souls, and use their souls to shoot other monsters. It will be a full 3 episode replacement, with the 4th just being "bonus" maps that don't make the grade, or don't fit into the story/theme, or were made after the 3 episodes were finished. The screenshots look very promising so far but I'd suggest you take a look at them yourself.

REKKR is alive

Just saw a new screenshot from a project that I have been following for a while now: REKKR by Revae. To be honest, it's very ambitious for a one-person show but other projects have already proven, that people are able to create complex projects totally on their own (like ravage with Hocus Doom or MSPaintRock with Woolball). So REKKR is another special gem that happened out of nowhere. The special thing about it is: It's an Ultimate doom TC. It's intended to be vanilla compatible, but runs fine in ZDoom (and nearly every other engine) with the proper compat flags. The theme is vague norse/celtic/fantasy. Notable differences from Doom are a lack of hitscanning enemies, and that weapons are tad more balanced, rather than dooms obvious progression (as much as dehacked would allow for anyway). The weapons also (generally) function quite differently.

REKKR released

Revae has just released one of the TCs I have been waiting for a long time now. REKKR is an ambitious vanilla TC set in a fantasy world that feels vaguely Norse or Celtic. You are a warrior recently returned from war, only to find your hometown massacred by hellish creatures. From there you set out to find revenge. So what does it feature?

  • 27 maps + 8 and 1/2 bonus maps
  • Over 10 monsters
  • All new weapons
  • All new music
  • All new sounds
  • All new graphics
  • All new everything

It should run in just about any engine you throw it at. For ZDoom variants, make sure your compatibility settings are for Doom (Strict), and don't jump or freelook or you'll break the visuals/everything. More information including a download link and a link to the project homepage can be found in the ZDoom forums.

REKKR Teaser

Just spotted that the modder Revae has posted a new "work-inp-progress" screenshot of his mod REKKR. Teasing is one of his greatest strengths, no doubt about that. If you haven't heard about this project yet, let's put it in a nutshell: It's a vanilla TC set in a fantasy world that feels vaguely Norse or Celtic. Think Skyrim, but without the billions of dollars or cohesive art direction, or planning. All the weapons and enemies and maps and sounds and musics and textures and graphics are new from scratch (except 3-4 textures that I re-shrunk from a high res Thief texture pack Revae did years ago). A total total conversion. The general idea is a 90's Doom clone. It started as a sprite tutorial and snowballed into a full game - and it looks brilliant so far. Check the thread, there is even a gameplay-trailer.
