The Doom Wiki arrived!

##### The Doom Wiki arrived! After several months of development behind the scenes, the new Doom Wiki has transitioned to its new home, moving from an advertised service to a very own home at www.doomwiki.org. All of the old articles have been moved to the new page so user's familar with that one won't notice and difference or problems. The improvements of the new wiki is the removal of all the annoying ads and beyond giving the layout a fluid width that fits to your browser window. So, time to improve your Doom knowledge now in every aspect possible, check it out!

The Doomsday is Upon Us

Source port The Doomsday is Upon Us Remember back in the day when 3D models in Doom and high quality textures were shiny new things that only a few ports could support? Doomsday was one of those ports, and now after 7 years of development a new version has been released!
Of the new features, what's included is support for newer operating systems and multiplayer support. Multiplayer support specifically should bring some interesting new experiences to the classic port that is Doomsday. Anyway, go grab it now and give it a shot, check out the addons section, and don't forget to check out the release notes too!

The Edge of Time

For me FireSeraphim isn't someone I had on my radar or did remember from the past. He actually said that he already failed a hundred times, releasing something but to be honest, I hope times change with The Edge of Time, a project that he is currently working on - it caught my interest! So what's so special about it? This iteration of  his project is not like any of the prior iterations or even like any other mod at all due to certain odd bits of gameplay decisions, which shall be listed here:

  • A rather unique scoring system coded by Zhs2 and PhantomBeta, where you get a random
  • powerup once you get the amount to trigger a score bonus,
  • inspired by the scoring system used in classic Konami arcade games
  • Deployable inventory items, including fan favourites such as the Morph Ovum,
  • an improved Flechette and cool new items such as the Golden Medikit, the Frost Ovum,
  • carryable Radsuits and Nightvision Goggles
  • Coins and Treasure items you can collect to add to your score to trigger score bonuses
  • New AI for certain vanilla enemies to spice things up a bit, as well as a few new foes
  • New Weapons, perfect for rising to the challenge!
  • New Maps made just for the mod

The Edge of Time - Beta released

The mapper Fireseraphim has just released the first beta of his mod The Edge of Time that we already featured a few weeks ago. This iteration of The Edge of Time is not like any of the prior iterations or
even like any other mod at all due to certain odd bits of gameplay decisions, which he listed in the original thread:

The Eye of the Tiger

##### The Eye of the Tiger Sometimes it's fair to deliver some news about projects currently in progress, that show potential and deserve some more attention. In this case I just picked Drakon's new project Survivor. What is it all about?

Drakon says: "[..] you have to create or find all your weapons by yourself. There is modified inventory system so you can carry only limited number of items. From items you find you can create new items via crafting (for example: sticks + feather -> arrows). Very important aspect will be material finding. Some materials are only dropped by certain enemies so it is up to the player if he wants to fight them and create something more advanced. Nearly all weapons have durability so they breaks after some time. [..]"

For me this sounds like a nice mixture of Minecraft and Doom which might turn into something very interesting. The project aims are ambitious but a lot of work has already done so chances are high that this gets actually released. More information can be found in the official development thread.

The Floating City

Floating CityThe mapper real_trisk who is already known for his projects The Island and E2M4 Redux is currently working on a new project under the development name The Floating City. We already know that we can expect a certain overuse of GZDoom features, and that is what he actually teases us with. Next to some in-progress screenshots you can also watch a small video that will show the basics the author plans. Wanna see more? Here you go!

The Golden Souls 2 Demo

Golden Souls 2 World MapEven though it has already been a while, I think it's still worth the news to share the release of a first 3-map demo of Doom: The Golden Souls 2 by Batandy. It is the sequel of the groundbreaking mario styled hub-based mod, this time you'll travel through levels with a world map, unlocking new paths by reaching secret exits or by collecting big coins. You must retrieve 7 Golden Souls stolen by the Cyberdemon's minions in order to save the world... once again! The first three maps are playable now so take your time, download the demo and give Batandy some kind words as this is the greatest mashup of Super Mario and Doom that has ever been and ever will be... (who cares about the MineCraft Mario Pack anyway?)

The Green Arrow

Green ArrowEven though this is not Doom-related, it's at least a brilliant mod for Doom's predecessor which deserves being mentioned at least for the sheer quality and amount of work that has been put into it: The Green Arrow is a mod by Team Raycast for Wolfenstein 3D - yes, the old game from the early 90's where you blast nazis. Green Arrow is the latest mod by Team Raycast. Based on the Arrow comics and television show, you will be playing as Oliver Queen aka the Green Arrow. Forced to go on a mission by Amanda Waller, Oliver has to return to the island where he became the Arrow: Lian Yu, also known as Purgatory. A dangerous mission awaits. The inglorious death of a sourceport?

##### The inglorious death of a sourceport? For those of you who haven't noticed yet, the Skulltag forums are offline now for a while and some of you might have asked yourself, what has happened here. To make things short: There had been differences between the staff members and the webmaster. As a result, the project has been forked and reorganized into Zandronum. Zanwhat? Well, keep the name in mind as I have the feeling that will most propably forget about Skulltag very soon as this might be the end of its development considering that Torr Samaho is the one working on the fork. Most of the questions that have already been asked have answers in the FAQ, everything else can be discussed on the new project site (currently in development btw). Even though it's always a sad thing to see a legend die, under the lead of Torr and the former Skulltag team, I am sure Zandronum will rise like a phoenix from the ashes - even better than before.

The Inquisitor III

inquisitor3Just noticed at the ZDoom forums, that Jake Crusher announced the release of the third and final part of the Inquisitor trilogy. The reason he made this thread is because after 2,5 years, Shadowman and BigMemka finally released the adventure, that puts an end to our brave Doom Hero's presence in the dark world known as Khorus, where both magic and firearms co-exist together, where evil may lurk every step outside the places, where is no warmth (especially kind soul's one), no honor, no honesty, no courage... only cold, emptiness, greed... and a dark stare of the death itself. But what strikes fear the most - a powerful curse hovering above the land, drying it from all it has in it, as well as making people believe that end of the world is approaching.
